The Congressional LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus is a bipartisan caucus centered on the representation of LGBTQ+ interests in Congress.

Background

The LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus was founded in 2008 by Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.) and Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.).[1]

The LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus is affiliated with Equality PAC, a political action committee that says it is “dedicated to bringing nearer the full legal and societal equality of LGBT people and creating a federal legislative environment conducive to that goal.” The organization says it supports “openly LGBT candidates running for federal office, as well as members of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus who are facing tough re-election challenges.”[2]

Mission

Per its official website, the CEC "serves as a resource for Members of Congress, their staff, and the public on LGBTQI+ issues at the federal level. The Equality Caucus works toward the extension of equal rights, the repeal of discriminatory laws, the elimination of hate-motivated violence, and the improved health and well-being for all regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, or sex characteristics (including intersex traits)."[3]

The CEC website highlights the following issues as key policy areas of focus:[4]

  • International LGBTQI+ Rights: The International LGBTQI+ Rights Task Force serve as a central organizing point in Congress for advancing the human rights of LGBTQI+ around the world, including by responding to efforts to criminalize LGBTQI+ identities.
  • LGBTQI+ Aging Issues: The LGBTQI+ Aging Issues Task Force works to push for legislative and administrative action to protect the dignity and security of older LGBTQI+ people.
  • Transgender Equality: The Transgender Equality Task Force (TETF) is committed to pushing for legislative and administrative action to ensure that transgender people are treated equally and with dignity[5]
