Hartford, Connecticut: Today marks the start of Connecticut's Primary Day with voting well underway in both the Democratic and Republican Primaries around the state. The voting will end at 8:00 p.m., August 14, 2012.[1]

The voting will assist in determining the final match-ups for the election in November consisting of the U.S. Senate seat, vacated by Senator Joe Lieberman, and the 5th Congressional District race.[1]

Both the statewide Republicans and the Democrats have candidates for the race. 5th District Congressman Christopher S. Murphy is facing against party convention endorsed candidate former Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz.[1]

The Republicans have former WWE/CEO Linda McMahon, who will be challenged for the Republican nomination by former 4th District Congressman Chris Shays. McMahon lost to Senator Dick Blumenthal in the final election just two years ago.[1]

As for the open congressional seat that is being vacated by Congressman Christopher S. Murphy, a total of seven candidates are vying for the spot. Among these candidates are Connecticut House Speaker Chris Donovan of Meriden, political newcomer Dan Roberti and former Cheshire State Representative Elizabeth Esty. On the Republican side of things the candidates are longtime State Senator Andrew Roraback of Goshen (who received the party endorsement), real estate tycoon Mark Greenberg, Lisa Wilson-Foley, and Justin Bernier.[1]

There is also a Republican primary in the 2nd Congressional District. Those candidates facing off are East Lyme First Selectman Paul Formica and his challenger, Daria Novak, of Madison. The winner of this primary will be facing Democratic incumbent Congressman Joe Courtney.[1]

In addition to all these races, there are a good many local races being pursued across the state of Connecticut as well.[1]
