I am proud to be Bellevue’s longest-serving councilmember and the city’s first Asian American mayor. Since first being elected in 1994, I have worked to guide Bellevue’s growth while keeping taxes low, maintaining safe neighborhoods, and strengthening vital community services. As Mayor, I helped launch regional partnerships on transportation and housing, and during my leadership Bellevue was recognized as one of America’s best places to live. In 2021, I was honored to be named “Best Elected Official” by the Bellevue Reporter. My focus has always been on delivering results, promoting fiscal responsibility, advancing sustainable solutions, and preserving the quality of life that makes Bellevue such a special place to call home.
  • Public Safety and Livability: Ensuring safe streets, strong police and fire services, and maintaining Bellevue as a city where families feel secure.
  • Fiscal Responsibility: Keeping taxes low, reducing waste, and making sure residents get the most value from city resources.
  • Sustainable Growth and Accessibility: Supporting smart housing and transportation solutions that preserve Bellevue’s character while making it a welcoming city of opportunity.
Fiscal responsibility, public safety, economic growth, livable neighborhoods
As a councilmember in Bellevue, I serve in Washington’s second largest economy, which makes this office uniquely important. Decisions made here have ripple effects across the entire region, from housing and transportation to business and public safety. Bellevue’s leadership helps set the standard for how local government can work effectively, responsibly, and collaboratively to strengthen our state.
For me, the most important characteristics of an elected official are integrity, accessibility, and accountability. Public service is a trust, and it demands honesty and transparency at all times. I believe leaders must listen to the people they represent, be available to hear concerns, and act with fairness. It’s also critical to stay accountable; not only by keeping promises, but by delivering real results that improve people’s lives. These principles have guided my decades of service on the Bellevue City Council, and they continue to shape every decision I make on behalf of our community.
The core responsibility of this office is to listen to residents and represent their voices honestly. It also means ensuring public safety, managing growth responsibly, and protecting Bellevue’s unique character. Above all, it requires safeguarding taxpayer dollars by keeping government efficient and accountable.
I want my legacy to be that Bellevue remained a safe, welcoming, and prosperous city under my leadership. A place where families thrive, businesses grow, and opportunity is open to all. Most importantly, I hope people remember that I always listened and put our community first.
Yes, I believe previous experience in government can be very beneficial. It provides perspective, knowledge of how systems work, and the ability to navigate complex issues effectively. My decades of service have allowed me to deliver steady, reliable leadership that benefits Bellevue and the region.
Strong listening skills, financial responsibility, and the ability to bring people together are essential for this office. It also helps to have experience with complex systems like transportation, housing, and budgeting. Above all, councilmembers must focus on serving people with integrity and practical problem-solving.
This office is unique because it is closest to the people; it directly reflects the voices and needs of Bellevue residents. The Council makes decisions that shape daily life, from public safety and housing to transportation and parks. Our work ensures that Bellevue remains safe, vibrant, and a leader among Washington cities.
