Conrad Rushing
Conrad Rushing was the presiding justice of the Sixth District of the California Courts of Appeal. He was first appointed to this court in 2002 by Governor Gray Davis and he has served as presiding justice since January 21, 2003. He was retained in 2010 with 75.9 percent of the vote.[1][2] His term would have ended on January 2, 2023. He retired from the court in 2017.
After his retirement, reports emerged that the California judicial council had investigated complaints of bigotry and sexual harassment against Rushing.[3] Rushing was accused of looking at photos of nude women in his office, making disparaging remarks on the basis of ethnicity or national origin, making comments about the appearance of female staff, and favoring male attorneys in his office.[4]
Education
Rushing received his Bachelor of Arts degree from San Jose State University and his LL.B. from the University of California-Berkeley Boalt Hall School of Law.[1]
Career
Rushing began his legal career as a private practice lawyer with a corporate finance, merger and acquisition practice. He worked for the firm Berliner, Cohen, Flaherty & Rushing from 1971 to 1974 and for Rushing, Ames & Norman from 1974 to 1978. He also served as a civil litigation attorney. In 1978, he was appointed to the Superior Court of Santa Clara County, where he served until his appointment to the appellate court in 2002. He was also a Justice Pro Tempore for the First District Court of Appeal for two months in both 1984 and 1987.[1]
