Three of the seven seats on the Coppell Independent School District school board were up for by-district general election on May 7, 2016. Place 1 incumbent Susie Kemp did not file for re-election. Newcomers Mary Duran and Leigh Walker faced each other in the race. Bac Cao Nguyen, Jonathan Kirby, and Jill Popelka filed to replace incumbent David Apple for the Place 2 seat. For Place 3, incumbent Anthony Hill faced challengers Pankaj Jain and Ronald Hansen. Venky Venkatraman filed in the race for Place 3 but officially withdrew on February 26, 2016.[1] There was no primary.[2] Walker defeated Duran in the Place 1 race while Popelka defeated Nguyen and Kirby in Place 2. Incumbent Hill retained his seat in Place 3, defeating challengers Jain and Hansen. Voters also approved a $250 million bond issue in the district.[3]

Voter and candidate information
The Coppell ISD Board of Trustees is composed of seven members who are elected by district to three-year terms in specifically numbered seats. Candidates file to run for a specific seat, but all voters in the school district are eligible to vote for every seat up for election. Places 1, 2 and 3 were scheduled for general election on May 7, 2016. There was no primary election.[4]
Candidates running for the school board had to be a United States citizen, a resident of Texas for at least 12 months, and a resident of the district for at least six months. Candidates also had to be 18 years of age or older and registered to vote.[4]

Coppell Independent School District is located in Coppell, a city in Dallas County, Texas. Coppell was home to 40,678 residents in 2014, according to the United States Census Bureau.[11] The district was the 98th-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 11,364 students.[12]
Demographics
Coppell outperformed Texas as a whole in terms of higher education achievement from 2010 to 2014. The United States Census Bureau found that 63.2 percent of Coppell residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 27.1 percent for Texas as a whole. The median household income in the city was $111,325 compared to $52,576 for the state. The poverty rate in the city was 4.2 percent compared to 17.2 percent for the state.[11]
