Incumbents Christopher Irving and Flavio Rivera, along with Emanuel Capers, won election to the board by defeating incumbent Kenneth Simmons, Joseph Atallo, Corey Teague, and Stacey Coleman. A special election was held for a fourth seat with a two-year term after board member-elect Michael Henry was barred from serving on the school board due to the discovery of a past criminal background. Teague discussed the district's projected budget shortfalls in an interview with the Paterson Press:

I have been speaking boldly and loudly against the illegal under-funding of our school district's budget by state education officials. As a parent from 2009 to 2012 and as a board member from 2012 until the present, I have aggressively advocated for the 2008 School Funding Reform Act to be fully implemented. We must highlight the fact that Gov. Christie is determined to destroy public education once and for all. The easiest way for him to do that is by flat-funding our budget. For example, if you are given $10,000 a year to fund a project. The next year the costs slightly increase to $10,100 and to $10,200 the following year. Now, how can you function with the same exact amount, year after year with cost increases?

One of the solutions would be to cut services and staff. Unfortunately, that is what is happening. The bottom line is that we must demand that the proper funding be applied to our budget. That funding must be calculated according to SFRA. And we must be given retroactive funds prior to 2009 when the decision was made by the NJ Supreme Court. That is one of the primary things we can do to evade the coming financial fiasco. Additionally, ineffective supervisors should be cut from all departments including special education. If cuts are to be made, let's start with those who fail to fulfill the job descriptions listed with their six-figure salaries and leave the good teachers alone. [7]
