Pennsylvania: Gov. Tom Corbett nominated Judge Correale Stevens as a temporary justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court on June 13, 2013. Stevens is currently a judge of the Pennsylvania Superior Court, a position he has held since 1998. He was nominated to fill the vacancy left by former Justice Joan Orie Melvin, who resigned amidst corruption charges earlier this year. Stevens awaits confirmation by the Pennsylvania Senate. If confirmed, he will serve until January 2016.
A Republican, Stevens' confirmation would tip the political balance of the court in his party's favor. The court is currently split evenly with 3 Democrats and 3 Republicans. However, due to Pennsylvania tradition, Stevens is not expected to run in the November 2015 election, when a permanent replacement for Justice Orie Melvin will be chosen.[1][2]
