Michigan: On January 7, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder confirmed early reports, announcing that Maura Corrigan would soon leave the Michigan Supreme Court to head the Department of Human Services (DHS). Justice Corrigan will leave the court this week, on January 14, 2011.[1]

Corrigan has been on the Supreme Court since 1998. During that time, she served two terms as Chief Justice, from 1997 to 1998 and 2001 to 2004. Before joining the high court, she spent six years as a judge on the Michigan Court of Appeals.[2]

In choosing Corrigan for the DHS, Governor Snyder has quickly provided himself with an opportunity to appoint a member of the seven justice court. Currently, four Republicans and three Democrats sit on the state Supreme Court, which is known as one of the most divided in the nation.[3]
