Recall reports

An effort in El Paso, Texas, to recall City Councilwoman Cortney Niland from her position was launched in December 2016. Recall organizer Michael Patino initiated the effort with a letter of intent to the city clerk on December 15, 2016.[1] Patino ended his petition drive in February 2017 after learning that Niland missed meetings due to a family illness.[2]

Niland was targeted for recall in 2012, but the effort failed due to lack of compliance with charter requirements for recalls.

Recall supporters

Patino initiated a recall effort against Niland due to community opposition over a new arena in downtown El Paso. His petition offered the following reasons for recall:

  • Failure to listen to the concerns of her constituents
  • Lack of respect for residents
  • Failure to keep the highest ethical standards
  • Failure to respond to constituents of District 8
  • Failure to protect her constituents in Union Plaza from displacement and demolition
  • Failure to protect her constituents in Union Plaza from the threat of eminent domain[1][3]
