St. Marie-Carls provided no public response to the recall following its announcement.[1] Petitioners submitted 1,275 signatures on January 16, 2018.[2] St. Marie-Carls lost the recall election to Ken Tutaj on March 13, 2018.
Recall vote
The recall election was held on March 13, 2018. Ken Tutaj defeated St. Marie-Carls in the recall.[3]
Recall supporters
Spoke initiated the recall effort due to concerns about the city's handling of complaints about the Mid-America Steel Drum facility. The company faced a class-action lawsuit from three city residents due to odors emitted by the facility. In November 2017, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency determined that the company violated federal law by transporting hazardous materials without necessary licenses and precautions.[4]
Alderman Ken Tutaj announced his support for the recall, arguing that the mayor was indecisive about the facility prior to the lawsuit and EPA ruling.[1]
