Cory Crenshaw
Cory Crenshaw was a judge of the Jefferson County Court at Law in Texas. He was appointed by the Jefferson County Commission on June 22, 2015, to fill the vacancy created by the death of Judge G. R. Flores. He took office on June 29. His term expired in 2016, and Crenshaw did not seek re-election.[1]
Appointment
After Crenshaw was announced as a possible appointee to the court vacancy, the NAACP Beaumont chapter raised concerns over the lack of minority representation in the area's judicial system. NAACP chapter president Paul Jones said, "To not be sensitive to that fact, and appoint someone other than a minority is really showing that you don't care or you're not sensitive to the process going on in this court."[1]
Crenshaw was successfully appointed to the court on a 3-2 vote by the commissioners. The two black commissioners, Bo Alfred and Michael Sinegal, did not support his appointment. Commissioner Eddie Arnold, who did vote for Crenshaw, said, "If the minority community feels this is extremely important, find you a great candidate, and get them out there, and elect them in the next cycle."[1]
Crenshaw said, despite the tension, he received support from minority members of the community.
| “ | I believe my support spans all aspects of the community, I'm going to be a judge for the entire community, not for any particular part of town, or for any race, I will be a judge for everyone.[2] | ” |
