The Council of Chief State School Officers, or CCSSO, is a nationwide, nonpartisan and nonprofit membership organization of educational leaders in elementary and secondary schools. Its goal is to provide support and organization for educational leaders to promote better education practices throughout the country. Its members work directly with state education agencies and meet regularly with each other and outside groups to design far-reaching legislation. The CCSSO seeks member consensus when working with legislation with the hope that it will be more effective with more education experts' opinions and approval.[1][2]
One notable contribution of the CCSSO is its work in helping to design and implement the Common Core State Standards. It did this in conjunction with the National Governors Association (NGA) and various other groups, experts, and leading thinkers. They also created a task force with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to help research and implement comprehensive systems of learning supports, a pool of unified resources to help schools better the educational lives of their students.[3][4]
