The Council of the Great City Schools, or CGCS, is an organization of the nation's largest urban school systems. The organization's primary goal is to provide the greatest public education possible in city schools. The CGCS emphasizes working with communities, making the most out of funding, and appreciating the diversity of all students. The council works towards its goals by conducting research, promoting beneficial legislation, maintaining positive public relations, and building networks with other school systems. By creating a large, unified body with shared goals, the CGCS hopes to bring urban schools to the highest standards possible.[1][2]
Background
The CGCS was founded in 1956 as a coalition of the nation's 10 largest urban school districts devoted to networking and group study. As the federal government began spending more money on education in the 70s, the CGCS played a large role in influencing legislation that favored city schools. Now, it has become a national body comprised of over 60 different school districts, and contributes regularly to national research and advocacy for city schools.[3]
Recent contributions
As a national organization, the council plays a great role in education-related issues. Although they advocate for public education as a whole, they naturally vie for greater opportunities and support for urban schools. Below is a list of some noteworthy achievements, but it is by no means comprehensive. Please see the "external links" section for more information.
- Successfully prevented an amendment proposition to a bill in the House that would have cut over half a billion dollars in funding for urban schools
- Won two Telly awards for its video publication promoting the common core
- Advocated successfully for more flexible guidance in facilitating urban schools' usage of Community Eligibility options for free student breakfasts and lunches
- Published an in-depth report on factors influencing the well-documented lower achievement of urban black males
- Fielded requests from Congress for more information on core standards, teacher quality, school improvement, and other issues
- Named four urban students recipients of the 2014 Math and Science Scholar award
- Conducted a 2011 report demonstrating a severe need for school remodeling/construction in urban areas
Again, this list is by no means comprehensive. Most of the contributions listed were taken from the CGCS's annual report for 2013-2014. Please see the original document for more information.[4][5][6]
