Four seats on the Coweta County Board of Education were up for general election on May 20, 2014. Incumbents Amy Dees and Harry Mullins were re-elected to Districts 1 and 3, respectively, while District 4 incumbent Graylin Ward was ousted by challenger Linda Menk. At-large incumbent Larry Robertson was unopposed and re-elected by default.

Coweta County School System is located in Coweta County, Georgia. The county seat of Coweta County is Newnan. Coweta County is home to 127,317 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[1] Coweta County School System was the 19th-largest school district in Georgia, serving 22,346 students students during the 2013-2014 school year.[2]

Demographics

Coweta County underperformed in comparison to the rest of Georgia in terms of higher education achievement and overperformed in terms of median household income in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 26.1 percent of Coweta County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 27.8 percent for Georgia as a whole. The median household income in Coweta County was $60,675 compared to $49,604 for the state of Georgia. The poverty rate in Coweta County was 11.8 percent compared to 17.4 percent for the entire state.[1]

Voter and candidate information

The Coweta County Board of Education consists of seven members elected to four-year terms. Five serve by geographic district and two serve countywide. There was no primary election and the general election was held on May 20, 2014 for four seats. Three seats will be up for election in 2016.[4]

Candidates began to file affidavits of candidacy on March 3, 2014. The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was March 7, 2014.[5]

Additional elections on the ballot

The school board election shared the ballot with county, state and national primary elections on May 20, 2014. Coweta County residents voted in elections for county commission, magistrate judge, solicitor general and state court judge. The primary ballot included races for Georgia House of Representatives and Georgia State Senate. There was also state executive elections including races for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general. The May 20, 2014, election also selected candidates for seats in the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate.[6]
