All seven seats on the Cranston Public Schools school board were up for general election on November 8, 2016. Incumbents Jeffrey Gale (District 1), Stephanie Culhane (District 2), Domenic Fusco (District 3), Janice Ruggieri (District 5), Daniel Wall (District 6), and Michael Traficante (at-large) ran unopposed and won re-election to their seats. The open District 4 seat attracted candidates Amy Ricci, and Vincent Turchetta. Turchetta defeated Ricci in the general election. Alan Depalo originally filed for candidacy but withdrew from the race before the election.[1]

The Cranston school board consisted of seven members elected to two-year terms in even-numbered years. Six of the members were elected by geographical district. The seventh member was elected at large. All seven members are elected every two years.[2]
The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was June 29, 2016.[3]

Cranston Public Schools is located in northern Rhode Island in Providence County. The county seat is Providence. Providence County was home to 633,473 residents in 2015, according to the United States Census Bureau.[7] The district was the second-largest school district in the state in the 2013–2014 school year and served 10,552 students.[8]
Demographics
Providence County underperformed in comparison to Rhode Island as a whole in terms of higher education achievement from 2010 to 2014. The United States Census Bureau found that 26.4 percent of county residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree, compared to 31.4 percent of all state residents. The median household income in Providence County was $49,139, compared to $56,423 for the entire state. The poverty rate in the county was 18.3 percent, while it was 13.9 percent for the entire state.[7]
