Croatian EU Accession Referendum, 2012

A Croatian EU Accession Referendum was on the ballot on January 22, 2012, in the country of Croatia. It was approved.

On December 9, 2011, Croatia had signed the European Union Accession Treaty, but a referendum and approval by the people were needed before the country could officially join the union. Approval of the measure made Croatia the 28th member of the EU. Croatia joined the EU on July 1, 2013.[1]

Support

The president of the country, Ivo Josipovic, urged residents to vote in favor of accession, arguing that the EU would allow for a solid base for the country to continue to grow and expand in Europe and in the world. President Josipovic said, "Croatia's membership will ensure a solid base to fully use the creative potential of our young country."[3] The Croatian Foreign Minister Vesna Pusic launched the campaign to support the EU membership referendum, issuing brochures about the EU and also implementing a phone line for residents to call for information about the referendum.[4]

Opposition

Croatian Party of Rights opposed the referendum.[5]
