I am first, a wife and a mother. I am a scientist and educator, and I have a deep gratitude that the opportunity to succeed in my life has been due to the ability I had to become educated. As a first generation college student, who has taught in higher education over 20 years, I am still overwhelmed at how blessed my life is because of education. I desire all who want the same to be able to also be educated.
  • Idaho needs a drastic change in how PK-12 is funded. We need to insist that educational funding no longer rely on volitile funding and the passage of levees. As one of the least-funded PK-12 systems in our country, this concerns me the most. Our children are our most valuable resource and we need to invest in them.
  • Property Taxes should not prevent those who own homes from retaining home ownership. We must push back on incessant increases in property taxes for Idaho's home owners. We must also extensively expand circuit-breaker relief in order to keep those on a fixed income, et c., in their homes.
  • Idaho needs drastic improvement in both hard infrastructure, as well as expanded broadband access across the state. We must repair our roads and bridges, we must allow for underserved and disadvantaged populations to have access to broadband internet in order that they are not at a greater educational, and employment disadvantage.
I am most passionate about access to high-quality education for all people. This starts in a well-funded pre-K program, all-day kindergarten, and extends into education through high school graduation. Education that offers children their most strong chance at success differs from child to child. We must rely on experts in childhood education to offer their students the opportunities to succeed. We must condition Idaho's children to be college and/or trade school ready at graduation. With the increased cost of living, our children deserve the opportunity to own their own homes as adults. The one thing that correlates well with earning is education. To me, this is sacred ground, and the issue I am most passionate about. Idaho must provide robust funding to support our most precious resource- our children, while ensuring educators and schools are adequately funded. We must insist PK-12 classrooms are not over-crowded, that history is being taught, and that critical thinking skills are a focus.
I have had many lights in my life, but the most profound and consistent are the teachers I had in K-12 and then college and graduate school. To teach and invest in the education of others is truly the errand of angels. My teachers and professors ensured that I greatly valued education, and the power an education can have to transform one's life.
Integrity

Critical Thinking skills
Good judgement
ability to accept and rely on evidence-based, peer-reviewed science
Veneration for experts in their field
A love of people
A passion for children and their future

Compassion
I am passionate. I understand and am committed to hard work. I am a fiercely protective mother. I am a loyal friend. I support and stand with my husband. I put in the work to do better. I am always learning.

I want to work to be the best version of myself, and I know that will be something i am working toward for the rest of my life.

I do not make excuses.

I try hard to not make promises that I can not keep.

I work to be inclusive.

I want to learn more about the things I do not know.

That I care about people deeply, and want to work hard toward making their lives more fulfilling and illustrative of the type of efforts they exert. I want to lead by example, ask for help from experts in their field, commit myself to filling in the gaps of my knowledge, and leaving behind a legacy of people whose lives were made better.
I remember the ash that covered our cars after Mt St Helens erupted in the spring of 1980. I was five years old, living in Medicine Lodge, Kansas. I remember being amazed that ask from Washington State made it all the way to Kansas.
After baby-sitting from age 11-16, my first job was at Hardee's. I had the job through high school.
The Cedar Post by Jack Rose. I read it long before I moved to Idaho, and it replaced "To Kill a Mockingbird" as my favorite book for reasons similar to why I loved Harper Lee's novel. The Cedar Post is a coming of age story from the perspective of an adolescent boy who has a major set of hard circumstances and tragedy's that have affected his life. In addition, he also has great talent- including great integrity and a desire to put in hard work. When he becomes a helper to a disabled neighbor, his life is transformed into such a story of profound beauty. It is a story about tenacity, struggle and triumph. It is the best book I have ever read.
Santiago from The Alchemist. What a glorious story.
My biggest struggle has been trying to be the best mother I can be to children without being too controlling. One thing that carried over from being a child raised in poverty and regulary subjected to abuse is my hyper-vigilance and feeling compelled to control my environment.
I view the state legislature and the governor as a powerful tool to allow for the constituents of the state to be in a position to be advocated for and served by those who elect them. Although the governor remains in power as a single person, over the state, the legislature is essential in bringing about change in areas necessary for a state to organically serve its population well. In addition, the state legislature is important in preserving laws that benefit the population.
The greatest challenge we have in Idaho is in terms of keeping up with trememdous population growth and the effects of the surge. This reaches constituents in every possible way: the infrastructure, housing affordability, stress on schools and educators, and the maintenance of family values.
I do not believe a person has a major advantage having had previous experience in government or politics. Mostly, people who get involved in politics with no prior experience have passion fueled by a climate that is not beneficial to everyone. Those who run with no experience are valuable, brave people compelled my their own morals and values to affect change in their government. That is commendable.
It is essential to build relationships in every aspect of life- personal and professional.
Ilana Rubel for her tenacity, Chris Mathias for his passion regarding education, Lauren Nechochea for her elegance, Steve Berch for his approachability.
Yes. Hearing the stories of those with full-time employment who can not afford to housing in this area, necessitating a stay in homeless shelters with children has absolutely broken my heart. How can it be that families with full time jobs, can not afford a place to live?
How about a limerick:

Jordan was here, but is no more
For what he thought was H2O

Was H2SO4
In some cases, as long as the powers are not abused by a super-majority from a one political party.
I absolutely believe that compromise, decorum and class are all necessary for policymaking. I believe that civility is also desireable.
