Curt Melcher
Curt Melcher was the Oregon Director of Fish and Wildlife. Melcher assumed office in 2014. Melcher left office on April 1, 2024.
Melcher was first appointed as interim director in September 2014 by the State Fish and Wildlife Commission when former director Roy Elicker resigned from office to assume a position with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.[1] After serving the department as interim director for five months, Melcher was chosen by the State Fish and Wildlife Commission to succeed Elicker as Oregon Director of Fish and Wildlife in February 2015.[2] He was reappointed in February 2019.[3]
Biography
Melcher, a native Oregonian, has been with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife for 28 years, starting his career as a district biologist and, most recently, serving as deputy director. Throughout his time at the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, he has represented the State of Oregon on several councils, including the Pacific Fishery Management Council, the Klamath Fishery Management Council and the Pacific Salmon Commission Southern Panel.[4][2]

After serving the department as interim director for five months, Melcher was chosen by the State Fish and Wildlife Commission as Oregon Director of Fish and Wildlife in February 2015.[2] Melcher retired in April 2024.[5]

Melcher was appointed as interim Oregon Director of Fish and Wildlife by the State Fish and Wildlife Commission in September 2014, after former director Roy Elicker resigned from office on October 10, 2014, to assume a position with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Melcher was appointed as director in February 2015.[6] Fish and Wildlife Commission Chairman Michael Finley said of Melcher: "His depth and breadth of experience in the agency, his long time relationship with the legislature, his longtime experience as a collaborator with the various ODFW constituents -- those all made him the best choice."[2]
