Efforts in Mansfield, Louisiana, to recall Mayor Curtis McCoy and City Councilman Mitch Lewis from their positions were launched in May 2016. Joann Atkins initiated the recall efforts against McCoy and Lewis. She claimed McCoy's abuse of power, lack of involvement in community, and economic policies led to her recall drive. Atkins pursued a recall of Lewis because of his support for the mayor's policies.[2]

The attorney general's office determined that the petition against Lewis received 316 valid signatures, which surpassed the 296-signature minimum threshold. The petition advanced to the governor's office, which scheduled the election for the council seat.[1] Atkins told local media that she had gathered 1,045 signatures against McCoy by November 7, 2016.[2] The parish registrar of voters certified 799 valid signatures on November 15, 2016, which fell below the 1,020-signature minimum threshold for a mayoral recall.[4]
