- A school board, member is primarily responsible for working with fellow board members to develop and implement education policy. This is done within the constraints of the New Mexico Public Education Department’s (NMPED) stated policies & curricula.
My goal is to maximize the board’s effectiveness to improve education outcomes where needed, and maintain success & high standards when present.
Our students in the Capitan school district deserve the best possible education outcomes possible, broadened horizons and a post-K-12 future that includes multiple opportunities for well-paid employment or productive higher education. - The Capitan school district is by far and away the largest employer and economic driver in our community. It needs to be well run, and fiscally responsible. I would work with other board members as a team to ensure a well maintained school property that includes prudent planning for the future. A productive relationship with our superintendent is essential to make sure this happens.
- The safety of our students is critical, both their physical, safety, and safe development of their character. To the extent that it is possible, the school board, working in concert with the superintendent, must ensure safety features are part of capital improvements. I am a firm believer in working within the protocols of the system, but if these are deemed less than effective, we should develop enhanced protocols to ensure optimum outcomes.
School boards do not teach, and they do not hire teachers, but they can help shape policy within NMPED constraints that can improve both teaching and learning environments.
There are opportunities in our community to really help the Capitan Schools make a difference for the kids and the Village of Capitan. We need school board members who know how to work as a team, develop and implement a vision, and think outside of the box.
