Dan began his public service at West Point under “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” After its repeal, he became one of the Army’s first openly gay helicopter pilots, deploying to Iraq and Kuwait to combat ISIS. As an Army commander, he managed over $300 million in equipment and budget and led more than 100 soldiers, ensuring everyone returned home safely.

From 2021-2023, Dan was on the Executive Board of the Santa Monica Democratic Club, leading support for Labor’s strikes in 2023. In 2022, he knocked on hundreds of doors to pass Measure GS for our schools and affordable housing and Measure RC to protect renters. He advocates for affordable housing, public schools, better wages, and compassionate solutions to homelessness, including mental health treatment and supportive housing. Dan also volunteers with Meals on Wheels, providing food security for local seniors.

Dan was elected Chair of the Santa Monica Pier Board in 2024 after his 2022 City Council appointment. As a Board member, he supported the Direct Action Response Team (DART) to address vendor violence and safety at the Pier. He is dedicated to fostering a safe, sustainable business environment for the city’s economic recovery.

In his business career, Dan launched the world’s largest electric delivery fleet, cutting carbon emissions in our neighborhoods. He now coaches executives to build inclusive, high-performing teams focused on equity and diversity.

Dan is a renter and holds a MBA from Harvard and a MPA from UNC.
  • CLEAN STREETS AND SAFE NEIGHBORHOODS Dan believes in a walkable, liveable Santa Monica where everyone feels safe in our downtown, neighborhoods, and parks. Dan will ensure our public safety departments are fully staffed and equipped, work with County leaders to expand behavioral health services, and invest in infrastructure to protect bicyclists and pedestrians on our streets to reduce pollution and accidents and increase sustainable living.
  • AN AFFORDABLE AND INCLUSIVE COMMUNITY Dan believes we should be able to live where we work. As a renter, he understands how challenging this can be in today’s economy especially for our first responders, teachers, nurses, and hospitality workers. Dan will fight for the strongest renter protections, invest in affordable housing, and cut through the red tape that causes home ownership to be unaffordable for too many.
  • GOVERNMENT THAT WORKS FOR YOU Dan believes in transparency and accountability in City Hall. For too long, our leaders have failed to ensure our tax dollars are spent effectively while they make grandiose promises and fail to deliver. Dan will hold himself and city staff to the highest ethical standards and work in partnership with our neighboring communities to solve the regional crises affecting us here at home.

I try to live my life by the Army Values I learned at West Point: Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage.
I got involved in politics to fight for under-represented and traditionally marginalized communities. I started my military career under "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and navigated my coming out journey under that legal regime. It was scary and I could have lost my career. When the law changed and I could come out, I had really incredible leaders who stood up for me in moments of discrimination. I do this work because I feel I have an obligation to pay those leaders forward, to take care of my community, and to try to leave my corner of the world a more inclusive place.
City Council cannot be treated as an entry level office. It is important for our city leaders to have experience serving in the government. I have over a decade of government service in my career and as a volunteer Board member at the Santa Monica Pier, where I am currently the Chair of the Board of Directors.
