Spjut ran for election to the Harris County Criminal Court at Law.
Primary: He was successful in the Republican primary on March 4, 2014, receiving 40.6 percent of the vote. He competed against Tonya Rolland McLaughlin, Mary Heafner and Ken Wenzel.
Runoff: Because no candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote, Spjut faced McLaughlin in a runoff election on May 27, 2014. He won, earning 59.0 percent of the vote.
General: He defeated George Barnstone and Brad Walters in the general election on November 4, 2014, receiving 51.8 percent of the vote.[1][2]

Education
Spjut received his undergraduate degree from the University of Houston-Downtown. He went on to earn his J.D. from the South Texas School of Law.[6]
Career
Spjut practiced law for fourteen years prior to taking the bench. Before that, he was a Houston police officer, a job he held while obtaining his bachelor's degree and J.D.[6]
