Spjut ran for election to the Harris County Criminal Court at Law.
Primary: He was successful in the Republican primary on March 4, 2014, receiving 40.6 percent of the vote. He competed against Tonya Rolland McLaughlin, Mary Heafner and Ken Wenzel.
Runoff: Because no candidate received more than 50 percent of the vote, Spjut faced McLaughlin in a runoff election on May 27, 2014. He won, earning 59.0 percent of the vote.
General: He defeated George Barnstone and Brad Walters in the general election on November 4, 2014, receiving 51.8 percent of the vote.[1][2]

Its more a reflection of popularity among attorneys, but poorly performing judges can get pointed out.[5]
Why are you running for this particular court seat?
I really enjoy being the judge of a misdemeanor criminal court. Its a chance to help first time offenders get back on track if they choose to do so.[5]
If you are not a sitting judge, do you have previous judicial experience? Do you believe it's important to have that kind of experience for this judgeship?
A judge needs good judgement . There are many ways to develop good judgement.[5]
Do you believe that it's beneficial for a judge to have previous experience in government or politics?
No.[5]
What is your primary concern about today's legal system in your state?
Overcrowding in our jails and not enough attention given to victims.[5]
What do you consider the greatest opportunity for the legal system in your state?
We need to find a way to break the cycle of recidivism.[5]

No, I am happy in this court.[5]

Education

Spjut received his undergraduate degree from the University of Houston-Downtown. He went on to earn his J.D. from the South Texas School of Law.[6]

Career

Spjut practiced law for fourteen years prior to taking the bench. Before that, he was a Houston police officer, a job he held while obtaining his bachelor's degree and J.D.[6]
