2015

Micciche participated in a candidate questionnaire from The Dallas Morning News. Some of the questions and his answers are below:

Why should voters choose you over your opponent?

Experience, a long history of volunteering in our schools, and a record of success for advocating for those struggling in poverty.
I have experience being a Dallas ISD Trustee and a proven track record. Below are some of the initiatives I have led and supported:
-- Wrote the policy that expanded volunteer tutoring to 92 elementary schools http://lakewood.advocatemag.com/2014/08/25/untapped-resource/ ;
-- Successfully advocated for and led the effort to restore Dallas ISD’s most overcrowded and neglected campus (Truett Elementary);
-- Supported the Imagine 2020 initiative, which increased teaching and staff resources and expanded wrap-around services in three of the District’s neediest feeder patterns;
-- Successfully advocated for the expansion of parental education programs – Dallas ISD now has the largest HIPPY (Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters) program in the United States;
-- Argued that Home Rule was not needed and offered suggestions for ways the City of Dallas and Dallas ISD could work together. Here is a link to an article I wrote on this topic: http://www.dallasnews.com/opinion/latest-columns/20140414-ways-to-improve-disd-schools-without-home-rule.ece ;
-- Based on parent and teacher input, successfully advocated for a reduction in testing in k-2 special areas (music, art, physical education), and when District tests are duplicative of state tests.

If elected, what two issues do you plan to focus on during your term?
1. Early childhood education: More than 60 percent of our students start school not ready for kindergarten. Almost 90 percent of our students are economically disadvantaged. Improvement in early childhood education for ages 0-5 is essential. I have been working on this in my first term with the expansion of the HIPPY (Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters) program, early pre-k registration, and ending social promotion of first graders.
2. Improve community involvement and parental engagement: We need to engage the entire community to make Dallas ISD a world-class school system. I wrote the policy that extended volunteer literacy tutoring to 92 schools. I meet regularly with parent and community groups and recruit volunteers to our schools. Here’s one of many articles that I have written calling for community support: http://www.dallasnews.com/news/community-news/white-rock-east-dallas/headlines/20150130-dan-micciche-faith-based-institutions-help-dallas-isd-schools.ece[4]

In a candidate survey, Micciche commented on the district's relationship with Superintendent Mike Miles, saying:

The current relationship between Superintendent Miles and some Trustees is very strained. I have a working relationship with every member of the Board and Superintendent Miles. It’s incumbent on all of us to work together to improve the lives and education of our students. This will involve better communication and more trust between the Board and Superintendent Miles. We need to rebuild trust by finding common ground.[4]
