A vote to recall Dan Morrill from his position on the Creighton Public Schools Board of Education in Nebraska was held August 18, 2015.[1][2] Morrill was retained and the recall was defeated.

Recall supporters led by Jody Fuchtman alleged Morrill failed to respond to community concerns and work for the best interest of district students. They also argued that he failed to properly evaluate the district's superintendent. Morrill defended himself, arguing he had been an advocate for students' education as well as community communication and input.[3]

Arguments for recall

Fuchtman submitted the following reasons for recall, which were included on petition forms, stating that Morrill:

Has failed to communicate and respond to the community; to act in a fair and impartial manner based on what is in the best interest of the students and district; surrendered his independent judgment to special interest; failed to evaluate the effectiveness of the superintendent on an ongoing basis; allowed the inequitable treatment of board members by an outside source.[4]

Arguments against recall

Morrill submitted the following defense statement on May 11, 2015:

I have worked to provide and support the best education possible for students, have held community meetings to discuss the best way to provide quality education now and in the future. I support the community’s right to vote on any long term plan, have worked to maintain ethics and integrity within the board, and have kept students as our priority.[4]

On April 20, 2015, Jody Fuchtman filed an affidavit with the Knox County Clerk's office to begin the recall process. Morrill was notified of the filing by mail and had 20 days to respond to the accusations in the affidavit in a defense statement.[5]

On May 11, 2015, Morrill submitted a statement of defense. Petitioners had 30 days from that date to gather signatures totaling 35 percent of the votes received by the highest vote recipient in the last election. A total of 164 signatures from Knox County residents were found valid in conjunction with 16 more from Antelope County, where part of the district lies. A minimum of 165 signatures were necessary to take the recall to the ballot.[1][5]

The election date was set for August 18, 2015, by the school district, which was notified of the recall petition's sufficiency on June 16, 2015. The election had to take place between 30 and 75 days from that notification. According to the Creighton News, the election was required to be set between July 30, 2015, and September 13, 2015.[1][2]
