Dan Smiechowski was born on Christmas Eve 1953 to an Italian mother born in France and a Polish father. His mother lived on the shores of Normandy during D-Day 1944 where she met and married his father, a WWII veteran. Smiechowski has been both a private and public school teacher, a real estate salesperson, landlord, movie extra, model, lifeguard, and caregiver. He became an Ironman triathlete in 1983. Dan graduated from SDSU with a degree in French and linguistics and also holds degrees in real estate and sociology. He has served as Clairemont Town Council’s public safety chairperson. He has spent many years on the Clairemont Community Planning Group.
  • The Cost Of Housing In San Diego And The Homeless Problem.

For the last fifty years the Mayors working with the developers have been saying the way to solve the homeless problem is to build more housing. The price of housing doubles every ten years, no matter how many houses are built and the homeless population continues to grow. The solution to both problems is to stop the sale of City owned land and lease it like the Port District. There is a direct correlation between the price of real estate and the amount of homeless.

25% of all real estate sells is the cost of land. Remove the cost of land by leasing it and you will reduce the sales price of real estate by 25%. Reduce the price of real estate and you will reduce the homeless.

  • Reducing The Cost Of Government: Four years ago San Diego as required by law reported expenses for running our government, Today City expenses have increased by one billion dollars. The pension fund is 30% of our budget. Personnel costs are the reason we have pot holes in our streets. The San Diego pension fund is out of control. The solution for the pension program is to institute a hiring freeze on all positions that have an annual salary of $150K or more, and put all newly hired employees for any City of San Diego job on Social security.
  • My vision for the future of San Diego is to develop Horton Plaza as a “fifteen minute city.” The idea of a “fifteen minute city” is all functions of a city should be accessible to the residents within 15 minutes of where they live. Building a high rise on Horton Plaza that is a “fifteen minute city” with each level devoted to different city needs allows a resident to access everything they need, jobs, retail, business, government and more without ever leaving the project. Parking would be retained for those shopping in the lower levels. The trolley and bus lines would obviate the need for residents to have cars on site.
Solving the high cost of housing and reducing the homeless population.

Using 1401 Market St. (the failed skydiving property,) I will put out an RFP to build a low income high rise senior citizen apartment complex on the site. I will require that the units have four bedrooms, 2 full baths and a kitchen.
My mother, Libera.

My mother lived in France during WWII. She married an American soldier and left her family and country for love. I know love because of her. I know that I am held to a higher standard because of her.

It took courage to leave France and come to America. In all the time I knew her she was fearless in her desire for social justice and equality.

She is my inspiration and the reason for who and what I am.

John Dewey was an American philosopher and educator who was a cofounder of the philosophical movement known as pragmatism. He also wrote extensively on topics such as democracy, education, ethics, and social reform. He spent most of his career at Columbia University, but he also taught at the University of Chicago from 1894 to 19041. He advocated for a pragmatic approach to government that was based on experimental inquiry, public participation, and social justice. He influenced many political thinkers and activists, such as Jane Addams, Martin Luther King Jr., and Barack Obama.

It is because of him that I believe that my involvement in this election is necessary. It is not enough to complain about how corrupt our city government is, you must espouse solutions.

I have the discipline of a triathlete and the compassion to show sensitivity to the suffering of others.
I am responsible to act as a leader of all people who are interested and concerned about making San Diego a better place to live not only for us but for our grand children. I have a voting record on affordable housing, parks and recreation, zoning and setbacks, contractor compliance, SANDAG, and eliminating all scooters ‘now.’ The desire of my constituents is my heartfelt and moral responsibility..

Building a "Fifteen minute City" at Horton Plaza.
Plato's, Republic, because it was relevant 2500 years ago and still is.
I am a very physical man, I have spent most of my life training for athletic events. I have struggled to find a balance between training and living.
I lead by example.

I conduct my life as an example to others by being morally, physically and spiritually disciplined to be at peace with myself. I am passionate about what I believe to be the morally, physically and spiritually disciplined, but I respect anyone who disagrees with my values.

Being a leader is not talking about values, it is living them.

Whether I am running in a marathon or for Mayor I call upon myself to exceed my own expectations.

The climate and the men and women in our City committed to the idea of making San Diego better for our grand children.
Stopping the run away development that destroys the enjoyment of this city.
One in which we both respect others responsibility to govern our fellow citizens.
One in which we both respect others responsibility to govern our fellow citizens.
If Brevity is the soul of wit, than all of our politicians are witless.
One in which we both respect others responsibility to govern our fellow citizens.
