Murphy ran as a Republican for the Oklahoma Corporation Commission in the 2016 election. She was unopposed in the Republican primary. Challenger and State Rep. Richard Morrissette (D) had declared his candidacy for the office in February 2016 following his vocal criticism of the commission's response to the recent rise in human induced earthquakes in the state. He ultimately withdrew from the race prior to the primary election, leaving Murphy unopposed in the general election.
