The election in Sweetwater featured five seats up for general election on November 4, 2014. There was no primary election.

The only sitting incumbent at the time of the election, former board president John McCann, did not file to run for re-election, but former members Bertha J. Lopez and Jim Cartmill, both of whom pleaded guilty to misdemeanors of accepting gifts above the state limit while serving on the school board, ran to reclaim their seats. A total of 21 candidates ran for the five open seats.

In Trustee Area 1, Arturo Solis won the election. Kevin J. Pike defeated former member Lopez as well as three other challengers to win election to Trustee Area 2. Cartmill was also defeated. His former seat representing Trustee Area 3 was won by Frank A. Tarantino. Newcomers Nicholas Segura and Paula Hall won election to the Trustee Area 4 and 5 seats, respectively.

Campaign themes

2014

Toogood highlighted the following guidelines on her campaign website:

Our community needs to, once again, have “pride of ownership” in our schools. We can regain that pride by following these guidelines.
  1. Focus on Education –Never forget that the purpose of the school district is to efficiently use taxpayer funds to provide every student with the best education possible.
  2. Stress Character Development– lead by example and promote Honesty, Integrity, Transparency and Respect throughout the district organization by all stakeholders. Set the tone by hiring a superintendent with great character and a respectful demeanor. Demonstrate to students how adults with character behave professionally.
  3. Encourage Parental involvement – Ensure that parents are aware of opportunities for involvement. Parents have a fundamental right to participate in the education of their children.
  4. Promote Communication – Encourage participation and input from all - community members, the Sweetwater district, feeder elementary school districts and institutions of higher education.
  5. Demand Fiscal Responsibility – Always keep the focus on education when considering financial expenditures. Maximize the amount of money that gets into the classroom. Use the lessons learned in business about maintaining your focus when considering how to use limited resources for maximum effect.
  6. Employ the best qualified teachers and counselors - Promote policies to retain exemplary employees and always treat them fairly and respectfully. Our students deserve this.
  7. Remember that Trustee is a Representative Position - a Trustee answers only to the community who elects her. Be available to receive input from community members and keep lines of communication open.[3]
