Daniel J. Furlong is a judge for the Supreme Court 8th Judicial District in New York.[1] Furlong won the seat in the general election on November 8, 2016.

Biography

Furlong received his undergraduate degree from the State University of New York at Albany. He earned his J.D. from Case Western Reserve University.[3] Furlong's professional experience includes working as a law clerk for Judge Joseph R. Glownia and as an attorney in private practice.[4]

General: He was defeated in the general election on November 4, 2014, after receiving 1.1 percent of the vote. He competed against incumbents Donna M. Siwek and Frederick J. Marshall, as well as John J. DelMonte, E. Jeannette Ogden, Dennis E. Ward and Mary Slisz for five open seats. [2]

The 324 justices of the New York Supreme Court are elected to 14-year terms in partisan elections. To appear on the ballot, candidates must be chosen at partisan nominating conventions. Sitting judges wishing to serve an additional term must run for re-election.[7]

The chief judge of the court of appeals appoints two chief administrative judges of the supreme court, one to supervise trial courts within New York City and one to supervise trial courts outside of the city.[7]

To serve on this court, a judge must:[7]

  • have had at least 10 years of in-state law practice;
  • be at least 18 years old; and
  • be under the age of 70 (retirement at 70 is mandatory).
