Daniel E. Knowles, III was a federal magistrate judge on the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. He was appointed to this position on January 6, 2003. His term expired on January 5, 2019.[1][2]

In October 2012, Knowles ruled that National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell had to share documents relating to the New Orleans Saints bounty scandal. Jonathan Vilma, a linebacker suspended as a result of his participation in the Saints' bounty program, had filed a defamation lawsuit against the commissioner. During the proceedings, Vilma's attorneys requested access to a full range of documents in the NFL's possession. Instead of completely agreeing with the request, Magistrate Knowles found that Goodell needed only provide those documents to the court.[3][4]
