I am a retired locomotive engineer who served as the Legislative Representative for the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen. Of my 43 years in running both freight and passenger trains throughout New England over 30 of those years I served as legislative rep. My duties included safety enforcement, political education to both the membership and the public. I also served as a labor lobbyist representing working famlies with the Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island AFL-CIO. I was a Primary Investigator on our Safety Task Force that worked directly with the NTSB on major railroad accident investigations. Helping and advocating working famlies is my passion.
  • My first priority is to portect the finiancial stability of working famlies including small businesses.
  • Proper educational funding for public schools. We must assure that our students have access to the arts, athletic activities, civics and programs that include life sciences.
  • Keeping it local. Strong support for Maine businesses and advocating that municipal and state projects give Mainers priority.
Having raised 9 kids I know first hand how critical public education is. Teachers make all careers possible. The role of the legislature is to spend taxpayers money wisely and it should only benifit citizens not special interests. Transportation infrastructure is critical for the general contuiance of commerce. Because I unterstand the politics and federal regulations of railroads I will work hard to make sure companies that need rail service and especially those who prosper in the future if freight rail may be needed. Maine is unique in it's renewable energy potential, the good paying jobs possible are critical for a sound tax base that can make some of the needed projects that will make Maine more inviting.
Barack Obama, he relied on experts when major decisions had to be made.
I am a pragmatic leader who wants to make life a little better for people, especially for those who may not have a voice.

The core role of a State Representative is to be involved with the issues of the constituents, vote on behalf of the constituents and respect everyones views even if are not your views.
I would like to be remembered for helping create over 500 good paying, permanent railroad jobs through commuter rail develoment and expansion projects.
As a highschool student of Ornamental Horticulture my first job was as a student working on my high school campus as the Grounds Superintendant because I was too young to get a "real" job. The following year I was old enough to get a work permit required by Mass state law. Then I started my own business and was too young to actually drive my own commercial vehicles.
The World is Flat, by Thomas Friedman circa 2005. This book outlined the new reality of international commerce through technology.
Angus "Mac" MacGyver, a television series circa 1985, the fictional character who could get out of desperate situations using anything at hand to solve mechanical problems. Many people on the railroad and the landscape construction trade called me MacGyver because I have good mechanical instincts.

My favorite story in this regard was when I was running a commuter train with over 1,500 passengers eager to get home on a hot July Friday evening. The locomotive suddenly failed. The Conductor came rushing up to see why we were stalled and I diagnosed the problem as a fuse that runs the Deisel engines governor. I asked my conductor for the clip that holds his CONDUCTOR badge on his hat, he agreed and I got the engine running and we were on the way!! The Conductor's badge was now hanging off his hat on his one remaining pin. He paraded his hat through the train to the delight of the passengers.
What is Life, By George Harrison circa 1971
It is somewhat important to have some previous exposure to the process, however; each state has different methods of moving bills forward.
The greatest challenge for Maine is to attract new workers and keep the ones wel now have. Creating new career opportunities is critical.
It is extremly important to develop relationships with legislative colleauges. By understanding as many opinions as possible it is easier to discuss issues that are foreign to fellow legislators, especially across the aisle. It is also crutial never to burn any bridges.
I would serve the Transportation Committee well as an active rail labor legislative representative. Over the past decades I have drafted dozens of rail safety bills.

The Labor and Housing Committee, my extensive experience in labor advocation would be helpful to the committee.
Agriculture , Conservation and Forest Committee, I studied forestry and agriculture, I had a commercial pesticide license and owned and operated several tree and landscape compamies and currently we own a horse farm and conduct Maple Syrup [ sugar bushing] as well a beekeeping.

The Energy, Utilities and Technology Committee interests me as I am a science enthusiast and have vast experience dealing with railroads which are the same as many utilities.
Almost all heart wrenching stories come from wartime militiary veterans. During my time as arail labor rep we had developed a PTSD program for our members who were at the throttle of a locomotive when a person is killed. Our program was developed in the early nineties and each time one of our members experienced a fatality [ usually suicides ] who were veterans they would always ask why the VA can't seem to understand.
