Daniel McKee (Democratic Party) is the Governor of Rhode Island. He assumed office on March 2, 2021. His current term ends on January 5, 2027.
McKee was born in Cumberland, Rhode Island, in 1951.[1][2] He earned his bachelor's degree in political science and education from Assumption University in 1973 and a master's degree in public administration from Harvard University in 2005.[3] He previously worked for his family's business, McKee Brothers Oil Corp., and owned and operated a health and fitness business.[4][5]
McKee served on the Cumberland Town Council from 1992 to 2001.[4] McKee ran unsuccessfully for Mayor of Cumberland in 1998 but was elected in 2000.[6] McKee served as mayor from 2001 to 2005, losing re-election in 2004. He won again in 2006 and served as mayor until 2014.[6] During his tenure, McKee established Blackstone Valley Prep, becoming the first mayor to lead a school board at a charter school following the enactment of a state law that introduced this practice.[7]
McKee was elected lieutenant governor in 2014, defeating Catherine Terry Taylor (R). He was re-elected in 2018, defeating state Rep. J. Aaron Regunberg (D) in the Democratic primary 51.1% to 48.8% and Paul Pence (R) in the general election. During the COVID-19 pandemic, McKee advocated for giving $125 million in CARES Act funds to assist small businesses with grants up to $10,000, a larger proposal than Gov. Gina Raimondo's (D) plan to spend $50 million with grants as high as $15,000.[8]
McKee took office as Rhode Island's 76th governor on March 2, 2021, after Gov. Raimondo was confirmed to serve as the U.S. secretary of commerce in Joe Biden's administration.[9] In his inaugural address, McKee said, "Together, we’re going to keep Rhode Islanders healthy. We’re going to get us back to work. We’re going to get teachers and students safely back in the classroom. We’re going to get our businesses back in business."[10] McKee won an election to a full term in 2022, defeating Ashley Kalus (R).
The Providence Journal's Patrick Anderson wrote that McKee was "a moderate...probably a shade to the right of today's median Rhode Island Democrat."[7] In 2021, he opposed a bill that would put a three-year freeze on building new charter schools, which he said would do "nothing to improve our public education system while the moratorium debate only serves to divide us."[11] In 2022, he signed a budget that eliminated the state's car tax and a one-time tax credit of $250 for eligible families.[12] In 2023, McKee signed a bill that permitted state funds to be used for healthcare plans covering abortions for state employees and Medicaid recipients.[13] In 2024, McKee introduced a budget that increased spending on education, lowered the minimum corporate tax and increased spending on building housing.[14] In 2025, McKee allowed the state budget to become law without his signature over concerns that the spending plan increased fees and taxes, saying it "is not a time to be putting fees and additional taxes on the working families in the state of Rhode Island."[15]
In March 2025, McKee announced he would seek a second full term as governor.[16]
Biography
McKee was born in Cumberland, Rhode Island, on June 16, 1951. He received a bachelor's degree in political science and education from Assumption College and an MPA from the Harvard Kennedy School. McKee was a business owner for three decades in Blackstone Valley, leading his family's heating oil business and opening a real estate firm and fitness center.[1][17][18][19]
