A lifelong resident of Long Beach, Dan has been a CPA for over 35 years. Dan has worked for well-known companies such as Coors, Pepsi and Reeds Ginger Beer. Dan’s roles were controller, auditor, and CFO. As a consultant for the Port of Long Beach, Dan authored the yearly budget and financial report. Throughout Dan’s career, his technical skills and commitment to transparency have been the cornerstone of his success.

Dan’s mix of auditing and accounting skills provide a unique foundation on which to build trust and transparency in the financial activities of the Long Beach Auditor’s Office.

Throughout his private sector career, Dan has remained active in our community. From refereeing soccer at LBYSO to being an active member of the St. Barnabas Parish.

Dan Miles is well known and respected not only for his professional expertise, but most importantly for integrity and personal character.

Integrity. Transparency. Accountability. These are the pillars on which Dan built his career, raised his family, and lives his life. It is also his approach to overseeing public resources and ensuring that taxpayer money is properly spent.

  • Restore Public Trust. The allegations contained within the whistleblower report represent a violation of the public trust. As a result, the City Auditor’s Office has been compromised. Rebuilding public trust and demonstrating transparency are essential. This starts with leading by example and following general accounting standards and best practices.
  • Open Checkbook For Long Beach. I will work to bring Open Checkbook to Long Beach, to provide public access to data related to government spending, budgets, contracts, and revenue. That means every expenditure made by the city will be publicly available on the City Auditor’s website. This will bring transparency to the City of Long Beach’s spending, enabling residents to understand where their tax dollars are being spent.
  • Repayment of Illegal Water & Sewer Fees. The recent CA court rulings that Water and Sewer fees were unconstitutionally assessed to Long Beach rate payers is a glowing example of why residents have lost trust in their government. Long Beach City Council has approved a $9 million refund, where is the other $20 million? I will work to ensure that Long Beach residents are properly and fully refunded ALL of the money as court ordered.
I believe that one of the biggest problems facing Long Beach today is the lack of public trust in our government. Integrity. Transparency. Accountability. These are the values I will bring to the office of City Auditor. I will work to bring Open Checkbook to Long Beach, to provide public access to data related to government spending, budgets, contracts, and revenue. That means every expenditure made by the city will be publicly available on the City Auditor’s website. This will bring transparency to the City of Long Beach’s spending, enabling residents to understand exactly where their tax dollars are being spent.
The fact that Long Beach is one of only four cities in CA with an elected auditor is an asset to the citizens of Long Beach. As an independently elected public official, the City Auditor is accountable directly to the people. As the public’s fiscal watchdog, the Auditor must have the trust of the people. Integrity. Transparency. Accountability. Have the integrity to do the right thing, even when no one is watching. Be transparent in your actions. Be held accountable by the voters.
Here in Long Beach we had a whistleblower come forward in the City Auditor's office. They noted serious irregularities with the current City Auditor's behavior and highlighted serious issues in the office. I truly believe we have to think globally but act locally. It is so incredibly difficult to stand up to power for what you think is right, especially when it is not a popular opinion. I strive to do what is right by the City of Long Beach taxpayers, regardless of how difficult.
I lead by example. Recently my campaign was called to account for a clerical error in our books. Not only did I immediately address the issue with the City, but I drafted press release complete with copies of the checks in question. People make mistakes. I make mistakes. The test is what you do after the mistake is made, how do you make things right?
Timely and succinct communication to the voters concerning financial activity of the city.
I want Long Beach to have an open checkbook that goes past my tenure as Long Beach City Auditor.
My first job was working at my father's chemical plant in the CIty of Long Beach. My eleven siblings and I worked most days before and after school helping my father run his small business. My father worked tirelessly, getting up early in the morning to start before the sun rose and it was this work ethic that I took with me as I became an adult.
I have read a lot and I tend to enjoy history books. I truly enjoyed the book, Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln.
Baby Shark. My granddaughter loves baby shark. Often when my granddaughter, who is is only two, is visiting us, I get to spend my mornings and singing baby shark and dancing around my kitchen.
I have very pale skin and burn very easily! You will always see me with my Long Beach hat, both to represent the city and to keep myself from getting sun burned.
Our City Auditor's office not only has the power to audit offices and programs within City Government, our City Auditor has the ability to provide objective commentary on fiscal matters.
The office of Auditor should always fresh eyes on the City's functions. Lack of government experience should be a desired attribute of the officeholder.
A successful Auditor will be able to read financial documents and understand the economic consequences of those documents. The Auditor must be able to forecast what the reports indicate as well as to document their review and analysis. Then the Auditor must be able communicate that analysis to the voters.
Behind every successful husband is a surprised mother in law.
