Daniel Ulysses Lockwood, 27, was born and raised in Cary, NC and is the son of two public school teachers. His father instilled a love for nature, and his mother a love for interior & graphic design.

Before his involvement in politics, Lockwood planned to design virtual reality environments and UIs. He deferred this passion to focus on what he felt mattered more.

Lockwood ran for Congress out of a sense of urgency. The climate crisis threatens to end society as we know it, yet our leaders are failing to act with that understanding. He believes our hope lies in championing a bold progressive platform on a national stage, and having the conviction to defend that platform from bad-faith attacks.

Lockwood, an Eagle Scout, serves as an adult leader of his old Boy Scout troop. Outside of the campaign, he organizes with the Piedmont Democratic Socialists of America. He consumes his free time with rock climbing, Magic: The Gathering, and World of Warcraft: Classic. He thinks he's good at Dark Souls.

Lockwood lives on the edge of the 4th district with his Ball Python, Cookie.
  • Over a half a million North Carolinians are under or uninsured. Healthcare is a fundamental human right. We must act now to pass a comprehensive Medicare for All plan that makes healthcare free at the point of service for all residents. This plan will ensure that no resident of our state or country would have to choose between healthcare and food.
  • The climate crisis is real and already upon us. We must act swiftly to pass the massive jobs program known as the Green New Deal. This policy will help us divest from fossil fuels, provide massive funding for much needed infrastructure changes, and provide assistance to individuals who are most impacted by the changing climate.
  • The War on Drugs has been a disastrous failure of racist and classist policing and policy. Low level black and brown offenders have their lives ruined over possessing the same drugs that rich, white counterparts use and own at similar rates. We must act immediately to end this failed policy: legalize or decriminalize drugs, demilitarize the police, and expunge non-violent drug records. We must also start to view addiction as a medical issue, not a moral failing.
Daniel Lockwood is passionate about education, environmental justice, healthcare, and infrastructure policy.
This campaign seeks to take a fundamentally different approach to this seat. We will shift the conversation on national issues further to the left, engage in outside-the-box tactics to radically oppose fascism, and develop meaningful relationships with local-level organizers within the district. We will not hesitate to call out Republicans and Democrats alike for their inaction and ineptitude.

By making Democrats take a hardline stance in support of our platform, we can mobilize disaffected voters to oust Republicans-even in red districts. We do this by communicating working class solidarity and our vision for a better future, not leaving the onus on voters to do wonkish research. We must reject and counter false, Republican-driven narratives about policies-like Medicare For All-that help an overwhelming majority of Americans.

Once elected, we have a limited window of opportunity to push as hard as possible for the future we know we can achieve. We need to avoid the mistake of the Obama-era Democratic majority in starting policy negotiations from the "middle."
Outside of the normal job-related duties, this campaign believes a Representative must stand in solidarity with the communities they represent. This means showing up to protests, participating in meetings, and visiting families in sanctuary, to name a few. This also means listening to their constituents in order to find out what they actually need, instead of telling them what they need.
Most Americans remember where they were on 9/11. Daniel Lockwood, in a third grade classroom at the time, remembers failing to immediately understand the impact of the attacks. However, his life was shaped-in part-due to the impact the event had on the American Psyche. Most of the people in this campaign, Lockwood included, have been living in a country that has been at war since we were 8-years-old or younger. From the overwhelming anti-Muslim rhetoric, to constant lies about WMDs and other dangers, it is hard to feel proud about the institution America has become. 9/11 is a massive tragedy, not just for the thousands of lives lost that day, but also for the lost futures of the millions of Middle Easterners who died or were displaced in the American retaliation-and the millions of innocent Americans who were targeted for the color of their skin.
While we do feel it's important for Representatives to have previous experience, we do not believe that experience needs to be formalized with a government position. Lockwood is active with local political organizations like the DSA, Healthcare for All Y'all, the Sunrise Movement, and the NC Democratic Party's Progressive Caucus.

A strong leader works on the ground with the organizations and individuals who have a firm understanding of the needs of their communities. A strong leader helps curate a diverse coalition of organizers, facilitates direct actions, and champions policy that materially improves people's lives.
We are in the middle of a climate catastrophe. We must act immediately and radically to overhaul our infrastructure, transform our energy grid, and change the way we develop to be more sustainable. Reentering the Paris Climate Agreement is simply not enough-and having that as our only communicated goal is a problem. The United States must implement the Green New Deal.

Leading the world in fighting against the climate crisis will strongly influence the global economy to follow suit. An ecosocialist Green New Deal will spur massive economic activity by creating jobs to build the energy infrastructure we need.

We also need to address the massive healthcare crisis we are facing as a country. Over a half a million North Carolinians are under or uninsured. The richest country on the planet should be doing way more to take care of our most vulnerable citizens. We must pass a comprehensive Medicare for all plan that would provide healthcare for all residents.
We appreciate the intent of our system to hold Representatives accountable, but the reality of this system leaves a little to be desired. A two-year term for Representatives is reasonable, provided we make a few changes in other places. As it stands, many Representatives spend a significant amount of their time in office fundraising and campaigning for re-election. Publicly-funded campaign financing would alleviate some of the pressure on Representatives to constantly fundraise. There is also an issue of poor voter turnout during years that don't include a Presidential race. Voter rights efforts, like making Voting Day a National holiday, would go a long way in lessening the pressure points of the 2-year term.

Ballotpedia biographical submission form

The candidate completed Ballotpedia's biographical information submission form:

What is your political philosophy?

In office, Lockwood hopes to implement a Green New Deal, pass Medicare for All, and end the War on Drugs. His goal is to leave behind a better world for future generations. By addressing known societal problems and laying a foundation for growth, the world's descendants can rise to the challenges of tomorrow. Humanity has only a decade to transform its energy systems in order to avoid ecological collapse—and conventional politics won't overcome this crisis. Lockwood put aside his other career goals to bolster the movement for radical change.

Is there anything you would like to add?

Lockwood, a native to RDU, has observed NC-04's technological and cultural expansion over his lifetime. To him, this district represents the success of forward-thinking infrastructure planning and cultural open-mindedness. He believes these concepts will have a positive impact when applied throughout the country.[2]
