My name is Daniel Wilson and I am a working-class transgender veteran choosing to run with no party preference for California’s 38th Assembly District so that there will never be a party, corporate, or any other special interest standing between me and the needs of my constituents.

I was born and raised in Maryland by a dedicated single mom that worked 2-3 jobs to ensure our survival. I started working at 14, came out as a lesbian at 16, and graduated from high school eight months after 9/11. I joined the United States Navy at 24 to empower myself with the tools necessary to achieve a better life.

I served four years as an aviation structural mechanic at a time when boots were still on the ground nearly a decade after 9/11 and honorably discharged in 2013. Following my separation from the military, I was finally able to marry the love of my life and begin my gender-affirming transition. During this time I was also blessed to become the first generation in my family to earn a degree after utilizing my G.I. Bill to begin my educational path to become a college history professor right here at Oxnard College.

It was all of these experiences combined with the 2016 Bernie Sanders campaign that came together to ignite the political fire that galvanized me to get involved in tackling the problems facing our community. I began volunteering at the polls, got hired at our local county office, and am now running for State Assembly to fight for a better California, for all of Us!
  • Everybody in, nobody out. This means comprehensive healthcare, quality public education, a living wage, and a clean environment shouldn’t be limited to only the upper class, but universally guaranteed, empowering all of us to thrive.
  • Prioritizing people over profits. This is the guiding principle of the campaign and dictates who we take contributions from, write legislation for, and who we are fighting to empower - the poor and working class.
  • The status quo is not working for working people. By questioning, challenging, and presenting new ideas to outdated societal constructs of a stifled and stagnant legislature, we will facilitate growth, ingenuity, and innovation in our communities.
Growing up in a working-class family with a single mom that relied on social programs to survive, being a minimum wage earner and then unemployment, living as a lesbian and then a transgender male, serving my country and then becoming a disabled veteran - I’ve been through many of the systems that fail the majority of Americans.

The areas of public policy I am personally passionate encompass comprehensive, universal programs to meet the needs of all our people because it is an indisputable fact that people work, learn, and function better when they have their basic needs met.

Marginalized communities carry the greatest physical and financial burdens in maintaining our economy while being exploited for profits by industries denying us basic benefits and a living wage. To those of us living with the consequences of decades of legislative failures made by BOTH political parties that have led us to where we are today, it is beyond obvious that the status quo is not. working. for working. people!

We need to flip our legislative priorities right side up and finally alleviate the unequal burden by demanding that every one of us is empowered with the guarantee of a living wage, quality public education, healthcare, housing, and the right to unionize. You cannot thrive when you are struggling to survive, and the working class deserves better than just surviving!
