I was born in Houston, Texas to a hardworking Colombian mother and studied at Texas A&M University, earning a B.S. of Agricultural Leadership Development with a minor in Political Science. My journey into public service began my junior year of college when I was accepted into an internship program to work as a legislative aide for agricultural policy in the State Senate. Upon graduating, I moved to Washington, D.C. for an internship at National Farmers Union, an NGO centered around legislation, education, and cooperation supporting the interests of small and medium-sized family farmers. After that, I began pursuing a Master’s in International Development through the Peace Corps Master's International Program, serving as an Environmental Action and Food Security Volunteer in Togo, West Africa. Upon returning from the Peace Corps in 2018, I began organizing for Beto’s Senate campaign during my final year of graduate school. The day after graduation, I moved to Austin. In 2019 canvassed for Bernie’s presidential campaign and in 2020, phone banked for Vanessa Fuentes’s City Council campaign. I’m a member in many local Demo clubs like Austin Environmental Democrats, Austin Stonewall Democrats, Blue Action Democrats. I’m a first-generation queer Latina who recently graduated ATXelerator where I won second place in the ATXL LIVE Pitch Competition and currently appointed to the Austin Hispanic/Latino Quality of Life Resource Advisory Committee.
  • I stand for housing as a human right. I am an advocate for the middle ground between those who believe the best solution to the housing crisis is dramatically increasing density and those whose priorities lie in preservation. She will explore creative solutions to an increasingly urgent housing problem. Austin needs more truly affordable housing across the board, while also preserving precious local ecosystems and rich historic cultures.
  • I will improve health-related infrastructure. I am a life-long advocate of mind and body health. She will prioritize dismantling the areas of food and healthcare apartheid throughout the district. Daniela uses her current platforms to normalize seeking help for mental wellness in communities of color and advocates for both increasing and improving mental wellness services for our most vulnerable populations.
  • I will fight for environmental justice. I will advocate for holding larger institutions responsible for their role in the environmental and cultural degradation caused by their decision to move to Austin, impacts of which are felt most strongly by communities of color. Daniela will also work to increase greenspace throughout East Austin, which she sees as a right and not an amenity afforded only to those of a certain income bracket. Austin must take climate resiliency more seriously. This is an issue that impacts all people, regardless of zip code or income level, but most immediately and strongly impacts economically disadvantaged families on the East Side, who are already the most vulnerable.
Housing, Healthcare, Environmental Justice and Climate Resiliency
I am passionate about equity, justice, and a city that can maintain long term sustainability. I have a calling to serve and am deeply concerned about the future of our city and the direction we are headed if housing, health, and environmental equity are not taken more seriously. It is time our elected officials not only have the academic and professional background necessary to do the job well, but the lived experience required to approach social, political, and economic issues with nuance and empathy. I am prepared to be the next City Council Member to represent District 3 by being equipped with a masters degree, which allows me to comprehend the policies that would be crossing my desk; experience working with government on a state, federal, and international level; a history of organizing, activism, and advocacy in Austin surrounding food insecurity, gerrymandering, homelessness, and restorative justice; and the lived experience that come with being a first-generation Millennial queer woman who is working class and a renter.
Additionally, no other candidates in the race recognize the importance of, and prioritize, both increasing density throughout the city and the need to protect existing greenspaces and ecosystems. I am the only woman of color, member of the LGBTQIA+ community, and person who has broad professional and lived experiences that allow me to envision a future for Austin that offers equal opportunities for a great quality of life for anyone who calls this city home. My diverse background and history grant me the ability to make connections with people from all races, genders, ages, languages, and political ideologies. I am the only candidate who works directly with our unhoused community and can provide educated and compassionate solutions to our crisis surrounding homelessness. I am also the youngest person in the race, which gives me the unique opportunity to connect with, inspire, and motivate young people to get out to the polls.
My first job was a Home Theatre Specialist at Best Buy when I was 16 where learned names, details, and differences between a vast number of electronics, trained employees and had my first experience dealing with customer relations! I worked there for 2 years.
