Candidate Connection

Danielle Shepherd participated in Ballotpedia's candidate survey on April 9, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Danielle Shepherd's responses follow below.[4]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) Advocating for programs and additional funding to tackle exploitation and human trafficking

2) Eviornmental safety for our fresh water sources
3) Providing tuition-free public universities in Ohio[5][6]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

I am highly passionate about fighting exploitation and human trafficking of our young people.Cite error: Invalid <ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[6]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Danielle Shepherd answered the following:

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Integrity and moral character should be mandatory of all political officials.[6]
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
I am passionate about building my community into a place that instills hope and a bright future. I am not easily intimidated, and I am willing to fight for the people who want to see a positive change in their community and the state of Ohio.[6]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
Integrity and good moral character should be mandatory of all political officials.[6]
What legacy would you like to leave?
I intend to leave a legacy that promotes "Humans are NOT for sale".[6]
What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?
I was 12 years old at the time of the Columbine High School massacre.[6]
What is your favorite holiday? Why?
I don't have a favorite holiday per se, but the winter/holiday season. People tend to be more courteous and thoughtful during this time.[6]
What is something that has been a struggle in your life?
Being a black woman in the construction industry.[6]
Do you believe that it's beneficial for state legislators to have previous experience in government or politics?
Depending on the experience, I think it can be very beneficial for state legislators to have a background in government or politics. However, such experience can also lead to being complacent and repetitive. Sometimes a fresh perspective is necessary for things to change, and our current political climate is in need of a major change![6]
What do you perceive to be your state's greatest challenges over the next decade?
The state of Ohio will face challenges concerning the student loan debt crisis, drug addiction/overdoses, a stagnated economy, higher unemployment averages than surrounding states, environmental safety of our primary fresh water source, and exploitation and human trafficking.[6]
Do you believe it's beneficial to build relationships with other legislators? Please explain your answer.
Absolutely! The state legislator is not a place for those who do not see the importance of teamwork, and for those who understand that working together is the only way to get things accomplished.[6]
What process do you favor for redistricting?
I am in support of a redistricting process that requires a bipartisan effort.[6]

Political philosophy

Shepherd provided the following description of her political philosophy to Ballotpedia:

"My decision to run for office is similar to my stance in my previous campaign in 2014, which is to provide a necessary change. However, in 2018 providing change is not the only thing that has inspired me to run. In light of the current political climate, I’ve decided to run to accomplish a dream that most parents of Millennials have for their children – to see us change the world. Our country and especially our young people are in need of inspiration. Through my campaign platform, I hope to provide not only necessary change but also motivate other young people to become more involved and active in all levels of government.

My campaign platform has been formulated to address challenges and issues for District 10 and the State of Ohio as a whole. First, I would like to advocate for making Ohio 4-year public universities free for residents. By doing so, we can grow the population of the state and attract large companies by offering a broad talent pool to meet their employment needs while generating more opportunities for economic development. Not to mention provide our young people with the opportunity to move forward into adulthood without the burden of student loans. My second stance is to propose new legislation for new and more aggressive state and local environmental protection for our waterways. Significant change can be made by working with other surrounding states of the Great Lakes to propose collaborative legislation to clean and protect our freshwater sources. If we share the problem we can all share the benefit. My third stance for this campaign is to propose additional legislation and budget expansion to address the crises of exploitation among our young people. The current Governor of Ohio has taken a firm stance on decreasing exploitation and human trafficking. However, we are still in need of additional programs and legislation that not only help victims recover but provide awareness and education on preventative measures.

Some may call my ideas imaginative, but if one dares not dream, then one cannot expect a better society to emerge.[2][6]

2014

Shepherd submitted the following description of her political philosophy to Ballotpedia in 2014:

I have chosen to be pro-active in taking a stance to provide the residents of district 10 with a candidate that is passionate and invested in the community, and has a strong desire to be a civil servant and advocate for the people.

District 10 is among other districts in Cleveland that is suffering with food insecurity and homelessness. The resources provided to take care of those residents who need assistance, can be used more efficiently and effectively. Through policy making and repurposing of the annual budget, it is my goal to provide a purposeful plan, which will decrease the percentage of those suffering from hunger, lack of proper nutrition, and homelessness. My platform is to remove policy barriers and repurpose resources to meet the basic constituent needs, such as food, shelter, and the betterment of his or her quality of life.

As a candidate, I hold integrity, honesty, transparency, and ethics as high virtues for occupying a political office. Constituents should no longer accept or expect candidates who lack these characteristics. It is time to raise the bar of expectations. It is time to elect a candidate who represents the people of District 10. It is time to vote for change![1][6]
