Twitter accounts suspended
On November 27, 2019, Stella's personal and campaign Twitter accounts were permanently suspended.[1] In a statement to The Washington Post following the suspension, a Twitter spokeswoman said that Stella's accounts had been suspended for repeated violations of the platform's rules.[2]
On November 26, 2019, Stella's campaign account tweeted the following:
“ | If it is proven @IlhanMN passed sensitive info to Iran, she should be tried for #treason and hanged.[3][4] | ” |
A follow-up tweet linked to an article in The Rundown News with more details on the allegations against Omar. The article referenced a deposition in the Florida trial of a member of the Qatari royal family in which Canadian businessman Alan Bender stated that Ilhan Omar had operated as an intelligence asset for Qatar, and by extension, Iran. A statement from Omar's office said that the allegations were fabricated as part of a Saudi disinformation campaign.[5]
In a statement released on Facebook, Stella said:
“ | To clarify, I said, "If it is proven ____ passed sensitive info to Iran, she should be tried for #treason and hanged". Treason is the only thing mentioned in the constitution for the death penalty, punishable by hanging or firing squad. I believe all involved should be thoroughly investigated. I did not threaten anyone. ... You are making this into something it's not. You are making it about race, about religion, about anything but the truth.[6][4] | ” |
