Campaign themes

Baas stated the following about his campaign in a Q&A with Vote 411:[1]

Why are you running for the school board?
To continue to serve my community and be involved. To be a good steward of our tax dollars. Being on the Board has made me realize what an important and worthwhile role I took on and I now wish to continue and help our district in any way possible.

How does your background prepare you for this office?
I have been an Officer in Mansfield for 15 years. I see the students, faculty, traffic, crime and all other aspects (good and bad) facing the district on a daily basis from a different perspective.

How will you balance school district revenue with educational needs?
Education is paramount to the district. Revenue is secondary. We must maintain a healthy fund balance, but we are not in the money making business. We are in the business of educating our children.

Explain how you will use your position to improve the quality of education.
I believe the position of a Board Member is to listen to the citizens, staff, students and executive council. After all information has been obtained, the Board should make an informed decision that is best for the district.

What are the most important issues facing your school district, and how would you address them?
Staying ahead of growth projections. We need to have a grasp of where we are growing and keep ahead of the trend. Security is another important issue. We have already began to address many of the security issues, but security is constantly changing, with new threats to all of our children and employees. We must always look for ways of improvement in safety and security. Student and faculty retention with higher graduation rates. We need to insure once MISD always MISD! [3]
