As a state representative, Dario Anselmo led by example. He passed legislation that boosted local businesses with tax relief, equipped educators with funds, and actively protected the health of Minnesota's lakes. His drive to bring lawmakers together advanced the mental health and public safety of Minnesota.

Hailing proudly from Duluth, Dario grew up in Minneapolis' western suburbs, and has called Edina home for 20 years now. After successfully growing & selling his first business, Dario embarked on another formative experience: owning the Fine Line Music Café in downtown Minneapolis. Through years of hard work, Dario transformed the Fine Line into a thriving business and cultural institution, hosting everyone from Bill Clinton to Sheryl Crow to Maroon 5 to Lady Gaga.

Alongside his business ventures, Dario has been an active community leader for decades, serving on the boards of numerous non-profits and civic groups, including the Edina Education Fund, the Depression & Bipolar Support Alliance (of which he was president), and the Warehouse District Business Association (which he founded).

Committed to practicing the politics of inclusion & civility, Dario was proud to put his "purple" message into action in St. Paul - mixing red and blue together to focus on solutions that put people over politics. As your next Hennepin County Commissioner, Dario hopes to continue to serve as a role model for how we can focus on what unites, rather than divides, us.

  • Individual mental health, and the mental health of our community as a whole, is a very important and personal issue to me. Hennepin County has an extensive mental health system, and making sure that it can provide stability for those who need it is critical. Understanding the complexities that come with a system that has multiple touch points will enable more to be done to help those directly and indirectly affected by our growing mental health crisis. I have worked with the mental health community for 25 years, and I will leverage those experiences to help Hennepin County deal with the mental health crisis many teens & adults alike are facing.
  • Making sure that Hennepin County residents are safe and that they have equal access to our justice system is the most important job of a Hennepin County commissioner. As a business owner and state representative, I was a strong supporter of our first responders and championed laws to keep repeat offenders from harming and harassing people in our major cities. As a county commissioner I will support the sheriff's office, and make sure that our jails and courts have the resources they need to do their work effectively. I also want to ensure that our first responders are fully able to deal with the increasing number of interactions they have with people experiencing mental health challenges.
  • Politics has become far too polarized in recent years; people are quick to focus on what divides us, rather than unites us. As your Hennepin County Commissioner, I promise to be a role model that exemplifies civility in politics & listens to the voices of all members of the community.
Mental Health, Transportation & Transit, Property Taxes, Public Safety, Housing, Environment, Climate Action, Workforce Development, Food Security, and Hennepin Healthcare.

A Hennepin County Commissioner is one of seven policy agents for the largest county in the upper midwest. Controlling a budget of $2.5 billion dollars, their decisions affects 1.2 million people directly and close to 3 million people indirectly. From public safety to healthcare, their post is truly important in the context of our broader state government & legal system.
My mother. Due to my father dealing with Bipolar Disorder & my parents' eventual divorce, my mother raised us a single parent at times. Nonetheless, she was the bedrock of our family; a figure of stability & support with a positive and energetic personality.
More than ever, listening to the people you represent is important. The best elected officials lead by constantly listening & learning. Inputting community feedback to create the best possible outcome is critical as a leader of a key regional unit of government.
I'm an active listener, learner, organizer, and leader with a positive outlook on live and public service. I'm energized by challenging situations, and look to make lasting changes in every endeavor that I am a part of.
"Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln." This is a book about how a one-term congressman prevails over his three more experienced rivals to win the nomination and then become president. He later brings his disgruntled opponents into his cabinet for the betterment of the nation. I've actually recommended this book to several people on my campaign!
Definitely. Having that previous experience in government - especially local & state government - is integral in understanding how to work with appropriate local, state, and regional actors to do what's best for the citizens of Hennepin County.
You need someone who has spent time in both the public & private sectors; someone who has lived in the district they will represent for a long amount of time. Beyond that, it helps to have an urban perspective, but still know that you are a representative of the suburb are looking to be elected from.

2016

Anselmo's campaign website highlighted the following issues:

Economy

As your next State Representative, I will:

  • Reduce the tax burden on Minnesota families, business and entrepreneurs. Minnesota has the 7th highest sales tax rate and 3rd highest corporate income tax rate.

Education

As your next State Representative, I will:

  • Work to ensure every family living in Edina has the opportunity to attend Edina public schools.

Environment & Energy

As your next State Representative, I will:

  • Promote affordable energy solutions that work for Minnesota businesses, individual consumers and our environment — and encourage American energy independence.

Seniors

As your State Representative, I’ll provide better leadership to represent our community's seniors and will:

  • Protect seniors’ ability to age in place, including keeping state income and property taxes manageable, and making it easier to save for long-term care costs.

Healthcare

As Edina's Representative, I’ll chart a course toward improving the current healthcare market and troubled MNsure system. I will:

  • Champion patient-centric improvements, so Minnesotans enjoy freedom of choice and access to the highest quality care.
  • Work to make healthcare more affordable through economically sound policy that fosters a competitive market for health insurance companies.[9]
—Dario Anselmo[10]

2014

Anselmo's website highlighted the following campaign themes:

Jobs & Economy - With my experience running businesses for decades, I understand what it takes to grow the economy and create jobs. Rather than helping our state's economy, St. Paul has rolled out red tape that hinders job creation. As Edina's Representative, I'll stand for pro-growth policies.

Education - As the father of three children in Edina Public Schools, I understand the importance of making our great schools even better while also improving outcomes for students across the state. As Edina's Representative, I will help develop policies to ensure that our children are able to meet the demands of a global economy.

Environment - Like most Minnesotans, I actively enjoy spending time outdoors. Edina is home to some of Minnesota's finest parks, lakes, and creeks. As Edina's Representative, I will promote sensible legislation to preserve these resources and work with organizations that do the same.

Senior Citizens - I know that property tax increases and rising healthcare costs are harming seniors across the state. As Edina's Representative, I'll provide better leadership for our community's seniors.

Healthcare - All Minnesotans deserve access to affordable healthcare. As Edina's Representative, I will chart a course towards improving the current healthcare market and the troubled MNsure system so that Minnesotans enjoy choice, quality care, and affordability.[11][9]

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in Minnesota

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
