Noteworthy events

Misconduct allegations (2015)

The Michigan Judicial Tenure Commission recommended that Judge Darryl Mazur serve a 30-day suspension and be publicly censured for two incidents that occurred in 2014. First, he wrote a letter to a woman that had appeared before him in court asking if she was interested in a romantic relationship. The woman had pled guilty in August 2014 to a misdemeanor domestic violence offense and was given one year of probation. After the two ran into each other in December, the woman sent Mazur a Christmas card, to which he responded with the aforementioned letter. The note stated,

I am not sure of your marital status. But if you are not, would you be interested in seeing me? Being on probation is a complication. I am interested if you are.[4]
—Judge Darryl Mazur[5]

They continued to exchange emails throughout the month of January, but no physical relationship ever developed.[5]

The second incident occurred after Mazur's former neighbor was arrested. Mazur asked the assigned judge to release her on a personal recognizance bond, set a date for a pretrial and send the woman to see him. The assigned judge spoke to Mazur about his discomfort with his request. The woman pled guilty and was placed on probation.

Mazur did not deny his misconduct and said, "I decided I will move forward, take my lumps for making the poor decisions I made, make amends and get beyond it." He represented himself in the proceedings and the commission said he was "candid and frank about his behavior and the commission is convinced of his sincerity." They recommended that the judge be publicly censured and serve a 30-day suspension.[5] On November 30, the Michigan Supreme Court agreed to the commission's recommendation. His suspension, without pay, began in mid-December.[6]
