I am a husband of almost 48 years and a father of 3 and a Papa to 9 grandchildren. I have been entrepreneurial, a self employed business owner, and a corporate officer. Living life in the midst that and the ability to remain straight forward with common sense has served me well. Public service in the communities that I have lived has also been ever-present in my and my family's lives. Being an active part of the community has always been a role in which I have operated in. Church and school. professionals associations, service clubs and volunteering have been a main stay.
I have always enjoyed the outdoors immensely in every season. I am one who gets great satisfaction if the beauty of our land around us.
Today, grandchildren's activities and supporting them and their parents in life is an honor and the goal their mother and I set forth to achieve many years ago. - Education needs our support and attention constantly as input to school administration, and school board accountability is key locally. As a Legislator, it will be incumbent upon me to listen keenly and support adequate funding while balancing burden placed upon us as taxpayers tax payers.
- There are many factors that we attribute to quality of
life. We must build our families' lives around freedoms and beliefs that allow for this. I promise to use my ears first and listen before jumping to conclusions that may infringe upon those and be sure to support sound policy.
- We already enjoy a strong business climate in South Dakota and it is my desire to further strengthen the reasons we can say support our strong economy and safe guard those in
I believe in the protection of life and our 2nd amendment rights.
I was extremely lucky to have four close friends whose Dads took me under their wings after losing mine. Those four men taught me how to discern right from wrong, respect others at all times, shared their faith with me, and be a male face for my Mother. I have chosen those four much of my life to model myself after and it has served me extremely well.
I fully will represent and believe in the platform of my party. I grew up in a home that often involved discussion between generational family members of politics. I learned from those discussions that appropriate compromise may be pivotal in accomplishing certain goals. Do not read into this statement something that is not there. However, in life and business I have experienced times when solid, calculated for the good, and appropriate compromise can be good rather than potentially losing a whole concept tp stubbornness.
I do not have many words for this, but a few can speak volumes. I I look for integrity, passion, and commitment in those I choose to represent me. I strive to exhibit those qualities daily in life.
Common Sense, Compassion, and Integrity. I have made a living with my ears over my mouth first. I have followed that Mantra my whole life.
I believe very strongly in the support of both the Constitution of our United States and the Constitution of the State of South Dakota. It is imperative to carry out the provisions set forth in both of those documents while preforming the duties of an elected official in the Legislature. I also believe that those duties must be preformed with the utmost integrity and decisions and that those decisions are made on the full intentions of myself thru the legislative process and never based upon influence by reward. (Integrity). Listening and access are extremely important as I will be that representation as the title suggests. It is also imperative that I find and take opportunities that come my way to better my service thru education and training offered to myself in this role.
I first of all want my family to know that I tried in all situations to be there for them. I want all around me to know wrong is wrong and right is right. It is also important that I can portray to others that each of us deserves chances to pick back up and start again because mistakes have been and may be made again and wrongs can be corrected. I also want others to know that service and helping others is how we exist on this earth. I wish to show myself thru my faith and that I love and respect my Country and its Constitution.
I remember very clearly the day President Kennedy was assassinated. I was actually very young but remember my bus driver having the radio on and being very disturbed by what he was listening to. Upon arriving at home, my parents were also sitting listening to a radio in our kitchen and I understood it was something special they were interested in as that time of day for my Dad to be in the house just was not the norm. When told what was happening, it made sense to me because of the discussions by my family in regards our President before this event. Obviously, it became clearer in my mind as I got older and processed it to more understanding. My mother was very enamored with Jackie Kennedy.
I grew up on a farm but my Mother and I moved into town when I was a teenager. I continued to work on the farm but my first paying job off the farm was closing a small restaurant in the evening and finishing the dishes and mopping the floors. I did that for over a year and then I mowed 12 yards during the summers.
A governor is most certainly going to have an agenda for an upcoming legislative session. Legislators will also have goals brought forth from a variety of sources including the people they represent. Each legislative body needs leadership that can support the process of reaching budget agreements that are a result of necessity and other lawmaking goals. The power of the veto and solid policy making most often will result in good lawmaking. It is my opinion that because the legislature and the governor both share the lawmaking powers, and even though there will be strong differences at times, cooperation and communication between the governor and the bodies is essential.
South Dakota is experiencing rapid growth. The expansion of urban areas and the suppling of services to this growth will present challenges. In my opinion, counties may be facing the largest of those challenges. I also believe inflation and the surrounding effects it has on costs are going to be increasingly difficult when it comes to property taxes and the burden they create to many on fixed incomes after working their entire lives to have a home paid for. Labor forces and child care will be or are already major factors in our personal and business lives.
No I do not. A citizens legislature is extremely effective do to varied backgrounds and perspectives. No one person can directly relate to all situations that necessitate policy and or policing. Life experience is an excellent education. Pooling talents and expertise makes for good filtration of ideas before the body and very much enhances the result of policy making.
Yes, I do. Relationships allow for the sound boarding necessary to bring forth issues in a clear and concise manner. The mentoring you obtain from experienced legislators in extremely valuable. Time is always precious and experience is a great teacher. Relationships can be a great catalyst to an issue when in it's infancy. The list can go on and on actually.
Actually, there could be several. My seat mate back in 2003-2004 has been and continues to be an example to many in his field. Matt McCaulley.
The most impactful consistently come from veterans. Many are very similar, but our Viet Nam Veterans are at the top of my list.
Never say never, but my opinion there has not been an issue in this regard.
I do not have an agenda in this regard at the present time.
There are just being set forth and will be on my website shortly

Transparency is one of the most important forms of communication. Often times, confusion and contention are a direct result of lack of communication. Accountability must be demonstrated. When people feel they are not being heard or dismissed, cooperation goes away and erosion of trust in a particular process starts quickly. It is then an arduous process to regain that trust.
No I do Not support changes at this time.
