I am a Tulalip Tribal member and have worked in the environmental field my entire adult life and have seen the environment deteriorate due to new development and other pressures throughout my career. We have had several species listed under the Endangered Species Act. After over a decade of being on the list our salmon populations are still in jeopardy and the Southern Resident Killer Whale populations are also in jeopardy. I would like to continue my advocacy for the environment and these species in the legislature. I also grew up in a low-income family and back in the 1970’s my father started the Tulalip Tribes alcohol program and the Tulalip Alcoholics Anonymous group, and my mother started the Tulalip Food bank at the Tulalip Church of God. Since then, the problems of homelessness and addiction have only increased. These are issues that affect every community, and I would like to work with legislators to help turn these problems around. I fully support the Democratic Party platform but also know the importance of working across the aisle to come up with solutions that can work for everyone.
  • As your next State Representative, I’ll use my expertise and experience to deliver meaningful policies that tackle these three main issues: chronic homelessness and mental health services, living wages and economic justice, preserving our environment and way of life. Through my 45 years working on state policy, I know how to get things done in Olympia.
  • I am currently Chairman of the Washington State Conservation Commission, appointed by Governor Inslee, and have been serving on the Commission since 2015. Previously I have served on the Puget Sound Action Team, predecessor to the current Puget Sound Partnership, and was appointed by Governor Locke. I served on the Action Team from 1998 to 2008. I was also appointed to the Snohomish County Marine Resources Committee as one of their original members. from 1999-2009.

I think the three biggest issues facing the 38th District are:

1. Chronic homelessness, addiction and need for behavioral health services;
2. Climate change/environmental issues; and
3. Living wage jobs.

There are no easy answers to any of these issues, but we need to work together as a community to develop answers that we can all agree to. Most of my experience is working in the environmental field. I have worked in several processes where tribal representatives, industry groups, environmental groups, local and state agency representatives have all worked together to develop solutions that we could all agree on. These processes have helped to improve our environment but more needs to be done.
