Campaign themes

2016

The following issues were listed on Calone's campaign website. For a full list of campaign themes, click here.

  • Jobs: The opportunities I had as a kid growing up on Long Island just don’t exist anymore. Our elected officials have failed to lay the groundwork for the jobs of tomorrow. Congressman Zeldin went to Washington promising to focus on jobs, but he hasn’t sponsored – or even voted for – a single real jobs plan. We deserve better.
  • Retirement Security for All: Before Social Security was enacted, the single biggest cause of poverty in America was simply growing old. And before Medicare, seniors’ greatest fear was paying for needed medical care. These two programs have been the most successful public undertakings we have ever done as a country. But these vital and successful programs are under attack in Washington.
  • Women’s Health: As a husband and father of daughters I’ve been disgusted by the full out attack on women’s health care by the GOP over the past few years. Congressman Zeldin has voted with his allies in Washington to defund Planned Parenthood’s work providing cancer screening and health services to women in need. He has voted against a woman’s right to choose, and has tried to put government between a woman and her doctor.
  • The Environment: Long Island is one of the most beautiful areas in the country and is home to an incredible amount of natural resources, it’s one of the reasons my wife and I decided to raise our children here. We must protect the air we breathe and the water we drink.
  • Campaign Finance: In 2010, the Citizens United ruling ushered in a new wave of outside spending into political campaigns. This must be stopped, and we need to enact campaign finance reform to keep our elections fair and ensure we are sending leaders to Congress who truly represent their constituents and not big money.
