Political career

California Insurance Commissioner (2011-2019)

Jones served as California Commissioner of Insurance from January 3, 2011, to January 6, 2019. He won election to the office on November 2, 2010, and was re-elected in 2014.

About the office

The commissioner oversees the California Department of Insurance, which regulates the state's insurance industry. The Department of Insurance is charged with licensing insurance companies and reviewing their financial statements, establishing rate regulations, investigating consumer complaints, and punishing insurers with fines or penalties for regulatory noncompliance.

California State Assembly (2004-2010)

Previously Jones was a member of the California State Assembly, representing the 9th District from 2004 to 2010.

Issues

Jones did not provide answers to the California State Legislative Election 2008 Political Courage Test. The test informs voters how a candidate would vote on the issues if elected.[3]

Legislative scorecard

Capitol Weekly, California's major weekly periodical covering the state legislature, publishes an annual legislative scorecard to pin down the political or ideological leanings of every member of the legislature based on how they voted on an assortment of bills in the most recent legislative session. The 2009 scores were based on votes on 19 bills, but did not include how legislators voted on the Proposition 1A (2009). On the scorecard, "100" is a perfect liberal score and "0" is a perfect conservative score.[4][5]

On the 2009 Capitol Weekly legislative scorecard, Jones ranked as a 94.[6]

Committee assignments

Jones served on the following committees during his time in the Assembly:

Jones' sponsored legislation included:

  • AB 1011 - Insurance: green incentives
  • AB 1218 - Health care coverage: rate approval
  • AB 1543 - Medicare supplement coverage

For details and a full listing of sponsored bills, see the House site.

Sacramento City Council (1999-2004)

Jones served on the Sacramento City Council from 1999 to 2004.

I am an educator and environmental advoate. My wife Kim Flores and I have two children. I have served as California's Insurance Commissoner,a State Assemblymember and city councilmember. Afer working my way through college and law school, I chose to work as a legal aid lawyer representing low income families. I have authored numerous local and state laws that are designed to help people and families. I am endorsed by the California Democratic Party, Planned Parenthood, the Sierra Club, and teachers, nurses and gorcery store workers. I am oposed by the oil industry, which is spending $3 million in attack ads to defeat my candidacy for state sneate and to elect my opponent.
  • I fight for people over corporations and special interests. The oil industry is spending $3 Milllion to defeat me.
  • The state needs to insist that cities and counties develop or approve sufficent shelters and affordable housing with supportive services to get poeple off of our streets.
  • Clinate change is literally killing people. We need to move faster to transition from fossil fuels and invest in sustainable infratructure and adaptation.
The top issues for my district are homelessness, affordable housing, and the need for more housing, the need to invest in sustainable infrastructure and to grow employment and high wage jobs with benefits, the need to expand access to healthcare and childcare, protecting reproductive freedom and choice, and combatting climate change.
