As an attorney who has worked tirelessly for a fair and equitable justice system, I have a passion for service and good government. I have had the honor to serve the Omaha community in many ways over the last two decades. Now, I want to build on the progress that so many others have made in this city and county and bring meaningful change to our system. This mission has been at the core of my career as an attorney, nonprofit leader, and advocate for people who haven’t gotten a fair shake. And it is why I am running for County Attorney in Douglas County.
  • We need prison reform. Nebraska faces the worst prison overcrowding in the country and the problem is getting worse. The current county attorney continues to prosecute and recommend long sentences for even non-violent offenders. It's time to change this approach with a focus on violent crime and sexual assaults.
  • We need criminal justice reform. Nebraska is now worst in the nation when it comes to racial disparities in prosecution and incarceration. While we all agree that public safety is paramount, it's not fair that we disproportionately punish black and brown people.
  • We need improved public safety with a focus on crime prevention. Nebraska has one of the worst recidivism rates in the country. This is due to prison overcrowding and a lack of investment in re-entry (post-release) and prevention (in the schools). I will use the bully pulpit of this office to ensure that we invest in these programs.
As the next Douglas County Attorney, I will work to reform and improve our County attorney’s office. This will include:

Not prosecuting low-level marijuana possession (and will not make exceptions because of
someone’s criminal record).

Will decline to seek mandatory minimum or habitual offender sentences based on underlying charges for marijuana possession.

Using the power of my office to support legislation that fully decriminalizes marijuana.

Using the power of my office to support legislation that will expunge (or seek sentencing reductions for) past marijuana-related convictions that would be treated differently today.

Changing metrics of evaluation to focus on crime reduction, not increased incarceration.

Immediate review of policies and practices with a focus on racial justice.

Working to reform cash bail so that it is used only in the most severe cases.

Increasing transparency.

Immediately ending the poverty trap of fines and fees.
This office is the most important public law office in Nebraska. This is because the County Attorney decides what cases get prosecuted in the largest County in Nebraska.
I admire Supreme Court Justice Robert Jackson. He wrote the dissent in the Korematsu case. The majority opinion said it was ok to detain thousands of US-born Japanese-Americans during World War II. Justice Jackson had the foresight to see that this was racist, even though it was the early 1940s.
You need to have integrity and a lifetime of service on behalf of those who are powerless or underprivileged.
I am a good listener, an active leader, and I like to accomplish things and move the ball forward
Directing a law office of 60 lawyers.

Representing the County in Civil Matters
Ensuring Equal Justice
Maintaining Public Safety.

Working in collaboration with educational, health care, law enforcement and other leaders in the community.
I helped make my community better for the most people
My first major historical event of memory was when the US beat the USSR in the 1980 Winter Olympics!
I delivered newspapers in my neighborhood. Started at age 12.
Infinite Jest. It just is.
The ability to enact diversion programs for those offenders whom do not pose a risk to society.
Excellent management and leadership skills with experience in various areas of the law.
Q: "How is a lawyer like a vampire?"
A: "Lawyers are not like a vampire at all."
