I am a goat farmer and own a small farm in Madison County, Georgia. I have owned my farm since 2002. I grew up on a small farm in North Carolina. My family raised poultry and rabbits. We had to move into the city when I was 12, because of economic difficulty. I attended a private Catholic school in Raleigh, and then attended NC State University, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. After college I served in the U.S. Army and then went back to school and received a graduate degree in Public Health from the University of North Carolina. I then worked at the Gaston County Health Department and the Tennessee Valley Authority's Division of Medical Services, before joining the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). I had a 34 year career at CDC. My last career service was as Associate Division Director in the Chronic Disease Center at CDC. I retired from CDC in 2004 and have operated my farm in Madison County since then. I have served my community on the Agriculture Committee of the Chamber of Commerce, as a volunteer stream monitor and scientist for the Madison-Oglethorpe Stream Team, and as Secretary and Political Action Chairperson for the Madison County Democrats. I believe in environmental preservation, fair treatment of all citizens, security for families and children, and affordable health care for all citizens. I also believe in rebuilding our middle class by helping families to have a liveable wage and a good job, and help with affordable shelter.
  • We in Madison County are about to experience a surge in growth, and we must plan for smart growth that will help our towns provide affordable housing, jobs that keep our young people here, and preservation of our agricultural land and family farms. This will require community consensus on strategies to achieve these goals. I can help build that consensus. I previously lived in neighboring Gwinnett County and I have seen how lack of consensus and passive growth policies can be detrimental. I will not let that happen in Madison County.
  • Our County's governance needs to be adjusted to meet the needs of our growth. Our County Commission is overburdened with trying to manage several departments and government functions. This has caused the Commission to be slow in taking action on many needed decisions. We should reform our governance to a County Manager- Commission system so that the County Manager runs day-to-day operations, leaving our commissioners time to research, examine, and decide on policy instead of trying to juggle all of the responsibilities of a growing county. We should also call more often upon the wealth of expertise available from our citizens. Establishing advisory citizen committees would allow for this expertise to be used for important needs.
  • Madison County is land-locked and water availability and water treatment will be a continuing problem. At this time, our water system is under the supervision of our Industrial Development Board. We should establish a Water Board for Madison County that concentrates on our water system for the county, works in concert with the Industrial Development Board, but also coordinates with our towns and plans for conversion of our system of primarily wells to a system of wells and water lines and water treatment facilities. This will keep us from the increasing costs of buying water and will conserve water resources. A Water Board will give our water system the special attention that is needed.
I believe that every citizen is important and that everyone should be treated equitably by our government and fellow citizens. I believe that we should ask our citizens to participate in our democracy by exercising their vote, belonging to community organizations of their choice, and offering their service when possible. To paraphrase what President Kennedy once said... Don't just ask what your county i can do for you, but what you can do for your county. If we can all have this attitude, we can do great things! I also believe that we can have a strong middle class by concentrating on policies that help people have a good job and a living wage, affordable shelter for their family, and available and accessible health care.

Representation by listening to constituents and making good decisions about tough issues.

Washing the family's supper dishes with my sister. I still wash the dishes, but now I have a dishwasher.
You all know the joke about the farmer and his prize 3- legged pig.
Always be transparent on personal and public finances. Remember that accountability is always expected by constituents and live accordingly.
