An effort to recall Dave Schneider from his position as mayor of Bell Fourche, South Dakota was initiated in December 2009. However, because no recall petitions were filed by the deadline a recall election was not held.[1] The recall effort was initiated following the firing of Bell Fourche's police chief and his second in command.[2]
Police firings
Mayor Schneider fired Lieutenant Erik Jogenson, shortly after the city council fired police Chief Tom Maunder in December 2009. Schneider cited "personnel issues" as the reason for the firing. However, residents in Bell Fourche argue that Schneider ignored various complaints filed against the police chief.[3][4]
Path to the ballot
In order to force a recall election, supporters were required to collect a minimum of 15% of the registered voters in the 2008 election or 501 signatures. No petitions were filed by the December 31, 2009 deadline.[1]
