Hello! My name is Dave Stock, running for State Representative for Iowa House District 44 as an Independent. I grew up in Clarion, Iowa until I went to college. I have a BA in Psychology, BS in Education, Masters in Business and have completed all coursework for my PhD in Educational Leadership.

I am running as in Independent because I believe that people want a Representative that represents THEIR interest and NOT a party. As an Iowan, we know that we do an excellent job thinking for ourselves! This is the time to let both parties know that we want and need a Representative that has their best interest in mind with all legislation, and can't be whipped into voting along party lines.

It is my hope that you will make the decision best for you when you vote in Fall 2020, and if I am blessed enough to be your choice, we will show that Iowa is that place that can vote for candidates that represent them and we are not party bound.
Education - Iowa has been the education leader for several decades, but is now starting to fall behind. The question we have not addressed is "why". The "why" I believe is because we have gotten complacent. Education is not just formal education, but all education from kindergarten through retirement. All Iowan's should have the best education from their schools, and that doesn't start with funding, but starts with allowing for choice in which schools their children attend. I believe that vouchers can help parents make the best choice for their children. Additionally, we must continue to support programs of lifelong learning, such as DMACC which is a shining example of what one learning institution can accomplish.

Healthcare - There should never be a choice to either attend a doctor or save money. We must continue to have healthcare that is accessible for everyone. That doesn't mean that it would be free, rather we must find unique ways to have access to healthcare. For example, what if you could access healthcare by volunteering a certain number of hours. We must not just think outside the box, we must eliminate the box.

I look up to a variety of leaders and try and use the best from each. These leaders range from Dad to Simon Sinek to Daniel Pink to Elon Musk. There isn't a single person that embodies everything that makes a great leader, rather each have qualities/attributes that I find have made them successful.
I would like to leave a legacy of always doing what's right, working every day to better my constituents daily lives.
The first big historical event I remember was the Space Shuttle Challenger accident. It went from the most exciting day to the most tragic and impactful day for me.
Growing up in Iowa, I walked beans and did detasseling in the summer, starting when I was 12. My very first "real" job was at Maid-Rite in Clarion, Iowa, where I worked for a year doing everything from cleaning dishes to serving food.
"Start with Why" by Simon Sinek
When you always do "what's right" you have to work hard to unite and not divide. Society is very divisive right now, and we must work to have a better understanding of each other.
In Iowa, each citizen has one state senator and one state representative to represent that citizen at the state level of government. The Iowa house is the first stop for bills where it is assigned, to a house committee, voted on in the committee and then if passed by the House it moves on to the Senate.
I believe that having some wisdom from past politicians is important, but that does not mean politicians should be the only ones we elect or that can be in politics, and we seem to be complacent in Iowa in doing such.

Politics should not be a lifelong career. I am entering politics because I believe I have life experiences that are different than others and will help me represent my constituents.
The greatest challenge over the next decade is to unit and not divide. Politics should not be dividing us, but brining us together to find common ground as we has helped us find success in the State of Iowa and the USA.
I believe the legislature should be the "advisor" to the governor. They must work hand in hand to get things done, not block each other from accomplishing the goals of the constituents.
It is not only beneficial but NECESSARY. I am running as an Independent to be the voice of the people and voice of reason within our State, hence by tagline of "Your Choice for Your Voice"., As the only Independent Candidate running for District 44, not beholden to any party, I am excited for the opportunity to vote for my constituents, not a party. In speaking to my constituents as I have gone door to door asking for their signature to get on the ballot, I am convinced that this is what people want in a Representative.
If redistricting has to take place, it should be based on the constituent count, disregarding political affiliation. The reason I believe this is that a Representative should represent those in their District, NOT party affiliation. Typically, political parties want to maintain legislative control when restriction, that should not be the purpose of redistricting.
I want to be the critical swing vote that will help everyone accomplish goals of the contents, so while I do not want a formal leadership role, I plan on having the leadership role of carrying goals across the finish line that are in the best interest of the continents and not the party.
In my lifetime the two most important legislators to me in Iowa have been Tom Harkin and Chuck Grassley, both for different reasons. Tom Harkin was very personable and reached across party lines with contents to help them, where I have had personal experience with him, despite my family being Republicans. Chuck Grassley has been the rock for Iowa in always trying to vote in doing "what's right", and I have great respect for him in voting his conscience.
