I am a 25 year resident of Missouri, married with 3 children, 2 of whom graduated from Webster Groves High School. I served 12 years as a member of the Webster Groves School Board, including 3 as Board President and 3 as Vice President. I led the board through a superintendent search as well as through the COVID epidemic. In my board tenure we oversaw a series of major construction projects all of which were completed on time, under budget and utilizing local contractors and workers.

My wife and I are the proud parents of an Eagle Scout and we have volunteered throughout the community on many endeavors including scouts and school PTO's.

I am an actuary by background, with a strong finance and leadership background.

I referee soccer at the High School and CYC level and have done so for more than 30 years.

My son-in law is a past SLCC student.

I have demonstrated a strong committment to all aspoects of public education, from kindergarten through college at every stage of my public service. I believe that a strong public education system, culminating with access to affordable college is key to providing everyone with opportunity they need to succeed
  • The Board of Trustees' most important role is to hire and then monitor the performance of the Chancellor. The current incumbent has announced his intention to retire in 2 years and the Board will choose his replacement. Having led the hiring for a school superintendent while President of the Webster School Board, I have first hand experience with what is an arduous task that I can bring to the process. In my time on the Webster Board I have also learned how a board sets priorities and goals and then manages without interfering with the day to day activities of the individuals tasked with delivering on those priorities and goals.
  • As higher education costs rise, STLCC plays a vital role in offering affordable associates and bachelors degree programs, workforce training, GED programs and community learning. But access to education isn't just about tuition - transportation, childcare and other barriers must also be addressed. I will work to ensure that nothing stands in the way of a desire to learn and to become a more productive member of society. Education is the step ladder that offers one of the best opportunities to lift yourself up and to get the well paid middle class jobs that allow people to support themselves and their families and to realize the American dream.
  • STLCC is modernizing its campuses to provide better facilities, expand programs, and increase access to education. As a former school board member, I know how to ensure that construction projects are completed on time and under budget. I place a priority on utilizing local contractors who will employ local workers and which will keep the wages in our community.
I believe that access to a high quality public education from K through High School and on to college should be an opportunity offered to all students. Saint Louis Community College offers an affordable way for students to get an associates or a bachelors degree. In addition to cost, it is important that other barriers to access, such as transportation and child care do not stand in the way of participation. Access to education offers a path to success, an opportunity to make the greatest use of your talents, and for many, a path out of poverty and a the first step on the ladder of the American dream.
The STLCC board is non-partisan body and elected officials must always keep that in mind. Elected officials need to be accessible, accountable and need to remember that they are elected by the community to ensure that students and the entire community can benefit from the community college system.
I have experience serving on an educational facility board (12 years on the Webster Groves School Board), where I gained experience dealing with many of the challenges that will face STLCC over the 6 year term. I have a strong financial and analytical background that has always been useful in my board service. I believe in accessibility and transparency of elected officials and I am interested to hear all opinions, whether I agree or disagree.
STLCC board members must be accessible, accountable and transparent in their actions. They must respect the confidentiality where appropriate. They must work with other board members as a team and while it it always acceptable to engage in debate about issues, once the board makes a decision they must support the decision and tehri fellow board members. My 12 years on the Webster Groves School Board taught me many important lessons about how an elected board can act most effectively.
I would like STLCC to have grown in stature and thrived in its mission. I would like to be able to point to all the students STLCC has helped during my tenure. Personally I would like people to remember me as someone they wanted to be around.
I remember the Carter-Ford debates, and in particular Ford's misstatement about the impact of Russia on Eastern Europe
I was a bartender in the UK through college (where the drinking age is 18)
Bill Withers - Ain't no sunshine (which features prominently in the movie Notting Hill)
I would, but its not polite about lawyers
The Board is empowering the Chancellor and the system to spend taxpayers money. Financial transparency of the utmost importance, not least so that by demonstrating the good use for taxpayer dollars the community will support the mission of the community college system.
