David Andahl
David Andahl (Republican Party) was running for election to the North Dakota House of Representatives to represent District 8. Andahl died on October 5, 2020. According to The Bismarck Tribune, he was not replaced on the ballot because his death was too close to the election and mail-in ballots had already been sent to voters.[1] He advanced from the Republican primary on June 9, 2020.
Gov. Doug Burgum announced the appointment of Wade Boeshans to the vacant seat on November 4. However, North Dakota Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem said that a committee representing the party of the previous officeholder had the authority to appoint a replacement.[2] On November 18, the Republican executive committee for District 8 appointed Jeff Delzer, the previous incumbent, to fill the seat.[3] On November 24, the North Dakota Supreme Court ruled that Gov. Burgum did not have the authority to appoint someone to the seat.[4]
On October 5, 2020, Andahl died from complications related to COVID-19.[5]
